Cares Act Information
In compliance with the provisions of the CARES Act regarding the awarding of emergency funds to students, this page provides information relevant to the CARES Act.
1. The Gavilan Joint Community College District signed and returned to the Department the Certification and
2. Agreement and the assurance that the institution has used, or intends to use, no less than 50 percent of the funds received under Section 18004(a)(1) of the CARES Act to provide Emergency Financial Aid Grants to students.
The total amount of funds that Gavilan College will receive or has received from the Department pursuant to the institution’s Certification and Agreement for Emergency Financial Aid Grants to Students.
- HEERF I: $1,164,099
- HEERF II: $1,164,099
- HEERF III: $4,642,500
3. The total amount of Emergency Financial Aid Grants distributed to students under Section 18004(a)(1) of the CARES Act as of June 15, 2023, is $6,982,500.
4. The estimated total number of students at the institution eligible to participate in programs under Section 484 in Title IV of the Higher Education Act of 1965 and thus eligible to receive Emergency Financial Aid Grants to students under Section 18004(a)(1) of the CARES Act is approximately 6,970 students for academic years 2019-20, 2020-21, 2021-22, and 2022-23.
5. The total number of Emergency Financial Aid Grant awards to students under Section 18004(a)(1) of the CARES Act as of June 15, 2023, is 8000.
6. Gavilan College used the following methods to determine which students receive Emergency Financial Aid Grants and how much they would receive under Section 18004(a)(1) of the CARES Act.
Awarding Criteria: Funding amounts vary based on financial need as determined by FAFSA and/or self-certified need identified by students who submitted a request for emergency aid via simple electronic form submission.
- During Spring 2023, based on the 2022-23 Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) or California Dream Act (CADAA), students enrolled in 3 units or more with an Estimated Family Contribution (EFC) ranging from 0-5,000, will be awarded emergency aid. The grant award is up to $500.
Criteria from Prior terms:
- During Spring 2020, Fall 2020, and Spring 2021, based on 2019-20, 2020-21 Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA), students enrolled in 6 units or more with an Estimated Family Contribution (EFC) of $1000 or less were auto awarded emergency aid.
- During Spring 2020, students enrolled in 3 units or more (credit and non-credit) who submitted a request for emergency funds were eligible for up to $200 CARES Act funds as determined by Gavilan College.
- During Fall 2021, based on 2021-22 Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) or California Dream Act (CADAA), students enrolled in 2 units or more with an Estimated Family Contribution (EFC) of $4000 or less were auto-awarded emergency aid. The grant award is up to $1000.
- During Spring 2022, based on the 2021-22 Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) or California Dream Act (CADAA), students enrolled in 2 units or more with an Estimated Family Contribution (EFC) ranging from 0-10,000, or CCPG eligible will be awarded emergency aid. The grant award is up to $1000.
- During Fall 2022, based on the 2022-23 Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) or California Dream Act (CADAA), students enrolled in 3 units or more with an Estimated Family Contribution (EFC) ranging from 0-5,000, will be awarded emergency aid. The grant award is up to $700.
7. Any instructions, directions, or guidance provided by the institution to students concerning the Emergency Financial Aid Grants.
- Students enrolled in the current semester who are experiencing financial hardships due to the COVID-19 pandemic may request emergency funds via the Online Application for Emergency Financial Aid Grants.
- Students must be currently enrolled in a minimum of 3 units+ or one non-credit course at Gavilan College for up to $500 CARES Act funds or State Emergency Financial Aid grants as determined by Gavilan College.
