Title IX
Gavilan College is committed to creating and maintaining a community where all members of the campus community (students, staff, faculty, and campus guests) can work and learn in an atmosphere free from violence, harassment, discrimination, exploitation, intimidation, and retaliation. Every member of the community should be aware that the College prohibits all forms of gender discrimination, including sexual harassment, sexual assault, dating violence, intimate partner violence, stalking, retaliation, and harassment or violence based on sexual orientation, gender identity, gender expression, pregnancy or parenting. Such behavior violates federal and state law as well as College policies. Title IX is a neutral office committed to safety, fairness, trauma-informed practices, and due process.
We urge all members of our community to report incidents of gender-based discrimination and sexual misconduct and encourage anyone who has experienced gender-based harassment, discrimination, or sexual misconduct to seek the care and support they deserve. Resources and reporting options are available to anyone (students, staff, and faculty) who may have experienced sexual harassment, sexual assault, dating violence, domestic violence, stalking, or any other form of gender discrimination. Contact the Title IX Coordinator to report an incident or learn more about available campus and community resources.
Please note, the Title IX Office deals specifically with gender-based discrimination and harassment. You can report all other forms of unlawful discrimination or harassment by submitting a completed complaint form here .
NEW 2024 TITLE IX REGULATIONS:
The U.S. Department of Education Final Rule on Title IX Regulations are effective as of 8/1/2024.
SUMMARY:
The U.S. Department of Education (Department) amends the regulations implementing Title IX of the Education Amendments of 1972 (Title IX). The purpose of these amendments is to better align the Title IX regulatory requirements with Title IX's nondiscrimination mandate. These amendments clarify the scope and application of Title IX and the obligations of recipients of Federal financial assistance from the Department, including elementary schools, secondary schools, post-secondary institutions, and other recipients (referred to below as “recipients” or “schools”) to provide an educational environment free from discrimination on the basis of sex, including through responding to incidents of sex discrimination. These final regulations will enable all recipients to meet their obligations to comply with Title IX while providing them with appropriate discretion and flexibility to account for variations in school size, student populations, and administrative structures.
Gavilan College is actively working with a consultant to revise Title IX policies to meet both Federal and California statutes. We are at a pivotal point in policy revisions, and we are working hard to make sure everyone is equally supported and protected. Gavilan College will still accept and review Title IX complaints as we update our policies. For any incidents that happened prior to 8/1/2024, Gavilan College will follow its 2020 regulations policy even if the complaint is filed after 8/1/2024. For any incidents that happen on or after 8/1/2024, Gavilan College will adhere the the 2024 Title IX Policy Regulations.
