Gavilan Veterans Council
The Gavilan College Veterans Council formed in Fall 2011 for the purpose of increasing awareness of veteran issues and promoting student veterans' success. As a working sub-committee of the Learning Council, the group actively helped to foster awareness, worked with the Student Veterans Club in an advisory role, and assisted with the Veterans Voices Project and other events.
The Council learned about the needs of student veterans by attending conferences and training classes, but most importantly by listening to our own student veterans' experiences on campus, both academically and socially. Using this information, the Council worked to expand service and provide a positive campus climate for student veterans to achieve their academic pursuits. In Fall 2014 a larger and more centrally located Veterans Resource Center opened in Library 109 to better serve the needs of our student veterans.
Though the Veterans Council is not currently meeting, past representatives have been volunteers from various campus constituent groups including administrators, managers, faculty and staff, as well as students.
