About Gavilan Summer Internships and Undergraduate Research Opportunities
Summer interns benefit from field and lab research under guidance from science mentors throughout the Bay Area. Students apply in the spring and get paid for their summer work, often launching careers in their chosen STEM fields. Participation leads to increased motivation, invaluable networking, improved dedication to studies, and a realization that they can do the work!
In order to involve science students in hands-on research, the faculty at our partner campus, San Jose State University, mentors and supervises student interns with their projects. A few students do projects in local corporations. Neighboring universities, government agencies, nonprofit organizations, and STEM-related businesses have all worked with Gavilan College to offer internships. Field research teaches students collaborative, practical skills unavailable in a traditional classroom setting.Summer Internships:

NSF Center for Genetically Encoded Materials Summer Undergraduate Research Program - Due February 1st
"You are invited to apply to C-GEM’s Summer Undergraduate Research Program (C-GEM SURP) where you will have the opportunity to perform cutting-edge research under the mentorship of seasoned scientists. Applications are due February 1st (apply here).
We are holding information sessions in January to answer last minute questions about the application. RSVP here.
C-GEM is seeking to expand the chemistry of the proteome, and projects span the chemistry-biology interface, including projects in organic synthesis, mass spectrometry, directed evolution, and structural biology. The program provides housing and board, a generous stipend, and support for travel to and from the research site. No prior research experience is required to participate!"
UC Santa Cruz REU Program on Sustainable Materials - Due February 2nd
"UC Santa Cruz is now accepting applications for their REU Program on Sustainable Materials, funded by the National Science Foundation (NSF).
This 8-week summer program provides students with hands-on research experience, working alongside UCSC faculty on cutting-edge projects in materials science with a focus on sustainability. Participants will:
• Conduct research on topics like renewable energy materials, biodegradable polymers, and green manufacturing techniques.
• Receive travel support and on-campus housing.
• Benefit from professional development workshops, networking, and career preparation.
This program is open to undergraduate students in STEM disciplines who are interested in pursuing research or graduate studies in materials science.
The Summer 2025 REU program will run from June 22 - August 16th, 2025.

National Institute for Innovation in Manufacturing Biopharmaceuticals (NIIMBL) eXperience program - Due Feb 7
Through industry site visits, mentoring, workshops, and more, NIIMBL eXperience @ SCU will provide your students with an inside look at the innovative culture and compelling career paths within biopharma. Participants will connect with industry partners, faculty, and peers to gain the skills and exposure needed to succeed.
Statewide California Earthquake Center (SCEC) Internship Opportunity - Priority Registration Due Date: February 16
"The SCEC Internship programs are now accepting applications for Summer 2025! Designed for students aiming to make an impact in earthquake science, these internships offer hands-on experience and mentorship that can be transformative for STEM careers. With the SCEC SOURCES program, interns from any location can engage in cutting-edge, remote research and connect with SCEC’s collaborative network. The SURE program offers an immersive, one-on-one mentorship where students work directly with experts on groundbreaking research in areas like paleoseismology and earthquake engineering.
Each year, over 200 applicants seek this unique opportunity to build essential skills, gain insight into the field, and grow their professional network—all with the guidance of SCEC scientists.
Eligibility & Requirements
All applicants must meet the following criteria:
1. Must be either a U.S. citizen or a U.S. permanent resident.
2. Must be an undergraduate during the entire year of 2025.
3. Must be a FIRST-TIME undergraduate.
4. Must be able to verify information provided in the application (e.g. provide transcripts or references).
5. Must be able to participate in interview(s) to complete the application process.
6. Must submit Transcripts (Official/ Unofficial) at the end of the survey.
Time Management & Availability
A SCEC internship should be considered a full-time commitment. If you need to take a class or work elsewhere during your internship, you must get SCEC's agreement – in advance – to ensure that other obligations will not be too demanding of your time or energy.
Tips for completing a successful application
1. Review all sections of the application carefully before you get started.
2. Ensure you have gathered the required information and supporting documents.
3. Complete the short answer and essay portions of the application on a separate platform. Then have someone you trust review your answers before you transfer them to the application.

SCEC is currently offering two fully-funded summer internship programs:
- SURE: Students are paired one-on-one with scientists for specialized, immersive research at the scientist’s institution or field site.
- SOURCES: A remote, mentored research experience designed to provide access to students regardless of their geographic location or local resources.
Both programs empower students to deepen their knowledge, expand professional networks, and contribute to impactful projects addressing pressing geoscience challenges.

Stanford Summer Community College Premedical Program (SSCCPP) - Due March 1st, 2025
"The Stanford Summer Community College Premedical Program (SSCCPP) targets current community college students considered low-income and/or underrepresented in medicine providing exposure to medicine and health through topics in health disparities, leadership challenges in health provision and administration, science success strategies, professional development, clinical exposure, successful preparation for the medical school application process, postsecondary and graduate/professional school financing."
SSCCPP recruits talented and motivated community college students interested in medicine to immerse themselves in the Stanford School of Medicine network through a variety of personal and professional development experiences. The 2025 program is expected to return as a six-week, residential program where selectees will live on-campus."
Stanford Medicine: Office of Diversity in Medical Education
Office of Diversity in Medical Education (ODME) was established in 1993 with the assistance of a grant sponsored by the Health Resources and Services Administration. The goal of the ODME is to prepare the next generation of medical leaders to address the health issues of a diverse society. The primary initiatives to address this goal include:
Expanding the diversity of the health professional work force, especially in academic medicine.
Promoting cultural competence in medical education for all trainees. Supporting scholarly projects in the area of health inequities in our diverse society.
Developing leadership skills in students from diverse backgrounds.
Working with faculty from throughout Stanford University to eliminate health inequities.
Enhancing the participation of alumni in the diversity activities of the School of Medicine.

2025 Nebraska Summer Research Program Due March 1st, 2025

2025 USDA E. Kika De La Garza Fellowship - Due March 6
"The United States Department of Agriculture’s (USDA) Office of Partnerships and Public Engagement, Hispanic-Serving Institutions National Program is pleased to announce that it is now accepting applications for 2025 Hispanic-Serving Institutions (HSI) Fellows through the E. Kika De La Garza Fellowship Program.
The United States Department of Agriculture’s (USDA) Office of Partnerships and Public Engagement, Hispanic-Serving Institutions National Program is accepting applications for 2025 Hispanic-Serving Institutions (HSI) Fellows through the E. Kika De La Garza Fellowship Program.
The purpose of this fellowship is to introduce faculty and staff from Hispanic-Serving Institutions to the vast array of USDA resources available to them. Fellows will receive access to long-term collaboration opportunities, and then share what they learned with students and colleagues at their home institutions. Applicants must be faculty or staff at a Hispanic-Serving Institution (HSI) or Hispanic-Serving School District (HSSD) to qualify.

Note: All applicants must fully commit to the defined fellowship dates.
Education Fellowship and High School Education Fellowship:
Education Fellowships are for faculty and staff at HSIs. High School Fellowships are for Secondary Education superintendents, principals, agricultural and/or district level teachers working for a Hispanic-Serving School District. Participants attend a one-week program in Washington, DC.
Science Fellowship:
Science Fellowships are for science faculty at HSIs. Science fellows collaborate with leading scientists from either USDA’s Agricultural Research Service (ARS), Food Safety & Inspection Service (FSIS), Forest Service (FS) or Natural Resources Conservation Service (NRCS). Participants attend a one-week program in Washington, DC, in addition to collaborating with a USDA Research Center within the country for an additional week.
Application Requirements:
Completed Application Form: Handwritten applications will not be accepted. Please complete electronically.
Essay: A statement describing your interest in the USDA and how you envision the fellowship will impact you, your institution’s programs, and your work with your institution and its community. Finally, describe how you plan to share information acquired during your fellowship with colleagues, students, and other interested individuals.
Resume: Submit a three- to four-page resume, including educational and professional accomplishments.
Letter of Reference: Please provide a letter of reference from someone capable of detailing your work and how this fellowship would stand to benefit you and the institution. This should be submitted directly by your reference. It is your responsibility to notify the designated individual of the need to supply this reference and to ensure that they do so before the application deadline.
Statement of Institutional Support: A statement provided by your institution's President, Chancellor, or equivalent individual capable of making the statement on behalf of your institution, stating their commitment to pay salary and benefits during your participation in this program. This letter should briefly establish that the institution supports your participation in this fellowship and, if applicable, intends to continue those salary and benefits, which would typically be provided during the fellowship period. This should be submitted directly by the individual designated to supply it. It is your responsibility to notify the designated individual of the need to supply this statement and to ensure that they do so before the application’s deadline.

Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL) Summer Internship Program - Due March 14th
"The JPL Summer Internship Program offers 10-week, full-time, summer internship opportunities at JPL to undergraduate and graduate students pursuing degrees in science, technology, engineering or mathematics.
As part of their internships, students are partnered with JPL scientists or engineers, who serve as the students' mentors. Students complete designated projects outlined by their mentors, gaining educational experience in their fields of study while also contributing to NASA and JPL missions and science. Students will also have the opportunity to participate in a number of enrichment activities, including tours, lectures and career advisement, arranged by the JPL Education Office."

Stanford Nano Facilities Spring Internship 2026
This is an opportunity for selected students to learn how things are made and seen at the micro- and nanoscale! The nano facilities are used for cutting edge research, in areas including electronics, MEMS, optics, physics, biology/biotechnology, medicine, materials science, and chemistry.
Details:
- Commitment of at least 8 hours per week (hours
are flexible) - Work at least two quarters
- Salary ~ $24 per hour
- No prior background or experience is required.
- All training will be provided!

About the Stanford Nanofacilities Winter/Spring Internship
Students will work closely with staff mentors in a cleanroom or other lab area to develop transferrable skills. Duties may include training on research tools, data collection, inventory support, chemical safety, technical support and maintenance, troubleshooting mechanical issues, or characterization of micro- and nano-fabrication equipment.
National Security Agency (NSA) Internships
Eligbility:
- Undergraduate student with one full-time semester completed at any institution
- Commitment to part-time or full-time position
- U.S. Citizenship
- At least 18 years of age

Eligibility
- U.S. Citizenship
- High school graduate or equivalent

- Currently attend a U.S. community college
- Concurrent enrollment or completion of 9+ hours of STEM coursework
- Able to commit to a 5-week online session
- Internet access
- Have not previously participated in NCAS

About the NCAS Summer Internship
Students participating in the NASA Community College Aerospace Scholars (NCAS) activity can expect to advance their capabilities in STEM, helping to prepare them for better representation and service in STEM fields. NCAS has three missions designed to challenge and build student knowledge and skills by focusing on NASA’s mission goals, collaboration, and career pathways.
NCAS uses NASA’s unique expertise, research, facilities, and other resources to engage students in authentic and experiential learning. Netflix Intern Program
Netflix internships typically start posting roles on a rolling basis at the end of August, and the intern recruiting season generally runs from late summer to the end of March. They will start accepting applications as soon as they go live. Once the role is open, you can apply directly on their job site.

How to Apply:

About the AAUW Scholarships:
Each spring, AAUW Morgan Hill awards several scholarships to women entering college and graduating from Live Oak, Ann Sobrato and Central High Schools. Students completing the “Common Scholarship Application,” available at their high school and due for submission to the high school counseling office in early December, are considered for these scholarships.
Fritts Family STEM Scholarship
Applicants must currently be a freshman, sophomore, or junior working toward a bachelor’s degree in science, math, technology, or engineering and planning to graduate from an accredited four-year college or university. They must live or have lived within the Morgan Hill Unified or Gilroy Unified School District boundaries. They must have a demonstrable financial need. Scholarship amount: $1000.

Lauren Jenkins Healthcare Profession Scholarship
Applicants must be accepted into a formal accredited university-based Healthcare Program- which leads to a professional practice license in fields such as nursing, dental, laboratory, medicine, molecular, pharmacy, radiology, physical therapy, occupational therapy, veterinary, etc. Scholarship amount: $2,000.

The SME Education Foundation inspires, prepares, and supports the next generation of manufacturing and engineering talent through its Student Summit event series, SME PRIME® (Partnership Response In Manufacturing Education) initiative, and Student Scholarship program.
