Gav Connect for Gavilan Students
We Look Forward to Connecting With You!
Gav Connect (Starfish) is an online tool that helps you stay connected with your instructors, counselors, and other student services. You get a better picture on how you are doing in class through feedback from your course instructors and are able to access services to help you succeed.
Gavilan College is using Gav Connect for:
- Early Connect
- Referrals to support services
- Scheduling appointments with your counselor
What can I expect from Gav Connect?
- Instructors may use Early Connect to give you feedback on your performance in their class.
- You will receive kudos to acknowledge your great work!
- Your instructors can raise flags when they are concerned about your academic performance or issue referrals if they think you would benefit from a campus resource. Flags are not grades, nor are they a form of punishment, rather they are a way for faculty and support services staff to communicate to you that a change may be necessary for academic success and to identify any additional resources that may support your learning.
- When your instructors raise flags, issue referrals, or give you a kudo, you will receive an email to your Gavilan email to let you know. Make sure to check your Gavilan email often!
- Though all instructors have access to Gav Connect, these items are visible only to the instructor who raised them, the student, and the Counseling team. Gav Connect is protected under the Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act of 1974 (FERPA).
- Gav Connect gives you access to your very own Support Network. Your Support Network includes contact information for members of the Gavilan Campus Community from many different areas who are ready to help you succeed.
How will I use Gav Connect?
- Take action if you get a flag and/or to-do items.
- Speak with your instructor, use a campus resource, and/or meet with a counselor to create an action plan.
- Celebrate if you get kudos - stay focused and keep up the good work!
- Raise your hand if you need help with something. We are here to help and want to see you succeed!

Getting Help
All students need help in college, but sometimes it is difficult to know who or what to ask. If you are having difficulty in a class, you should talk to your instructor about the problem as soon as possible to get recommendations for how to improve in the course.
Additionally, seek help through the many academic support services available to all students. Gavilan provides a number of free services and resources, including Counseling, tutoring, the Accessible Education Center, and much more.
