Cooperative Work Experience

The Cooperative Work Experience program is designed to provide students with an opportunity to earn college credit while working. This is a CREDIT/NO CREDIT course. The Occupational work experience section (190) is for students who have a job related to their major. Students can earn up to 4 units per semester, for a total of 16 units. The General work experience section (192) is for students who have a job unrelated to their major. Students can earn up to 2 units per summer semester for a total of 16 units. CWE 192 for 1 or 2 units may be taken through Service Learning. Students can choose a site to volunteer or instructor can place at established Service Learning site. A training plan is developed cooperatively between the employer, college and student. 

Course Learning Outcomes

The student will increase job skills in at least one of the following transferable skill sets: Communication, Research and Planning, Human Relations, Organization, Management, and Leadership, Work Survival. Measure: observation, oral or written report. ILO: 1, 2, 4, 6

Class Philosophy

Jobs are an integral part of a person’s educational experience and students are encouraged to work in jobs that directly relate to either their educational or occupational goals. Our Work Experience Program is based on the principle that significant and meaningful learning can be identified and achieved on a job if it is a planned experience.

Course Requirements

This class does not have a designated meeting time. However, the program orientation meeting is mandatory. Individual meetings will take place when necessary. The requirements of the course must be completed fully to receive credit. Requirements not fulfilled will result in a grade of No Credit. The coordinator will be available to work with students individually as needed.

Determination of Credit

Paid 75 hours per semester  1 unit of credit
  150 hours per semester  2 units of credit
  225 hours per semester  3 units of credit
  300 hours per semester  4 units of credit
     
Unpaid * 60 hours per semester  1 unit of credit
  * 120 hours per semester  2 units of credit
  180 hours per semester  3 units of credit
  240 hours per semester  4 units of credit

* CWE 192 for 1 or 2 units may be taken through Service Learning. Students can choose a site to volunteer or instructor can place at established Service Learning site.

ADA Accommodation Statement

Students requiring special services or arrangements because of hearing, visual or other disability should contact their instructor, counselor, or the Disabled Students Services Office.

Occupational / Vocational Statement

Occupational / Vocational students: Limited English language skills will not be a barrier to admittance to and participation in vocational Educational Programs.

Student Honesty Policy Statement

Students are expected to exercise academic honesty and integrity. Violations such a cheating and plagiarism will result in disciplinary action, which may include recommendation for dismissal.
