GOTT 1: Introduction to Online Teaching with Canvas
This is a 2-week course for instructors who are either new to using Canvas or looking for new inspiration. It is designed to help you learn how to use Canvas tools to support an effective online learning environment informed by principles of good practice in teaching.
Successful completion of this course means you will be able to:
- Use Canvas tools to design and teach your online course successfully, including announcements, assignments, grades, quizzes and setting up your profile and notifications.
- Effectively provide engaging activities, instructor contact and peer to peer contact in your course using inbox, discussions, Studio, and other engagement tools.
- Apply Gavilan College best practices, policies and guidelines for teaching online in your course, making sure all content created is accessible.
GOTT 2: Introduction to Asynchronous Teaching and Design
Great teaching can happen anywhere, but teaching online requires different skills, strategies and tools than in a traditional face-to-face classroom. In this 4-week course you'll gain proficiency in the unique qualities and perspectives of masterful online teaching, including powerful ways to support the success of online students, how to lay a foundation for a productive learning community, and infusing your course with your distinctive presence. We'll walk you through the pertinent federal, state, and local regulations impacting online teaching, and set you on a path to designing success for you and your students!
By the end of this course, you will be able to:
- Identify and discuss federal and state regulations that impact online course policy and practice;
- Identify local support for online teachers and learners;
- Design introductory activities that support an online learning community;
- Develop clear and supportive online course policies.
Duration: 4 weeks, approximately 10 hours per week, for a total of 40 hours
GOTT 4: Assessments in Digital Learning
We often think of assessment as testing, but tests are only a small portion of a very powerful set of tools. In this course you'll explore how assessment can help you:
- choose content that supports the learning outcomes and objectives of the course;
- scaffold learning to support the needs of diverse students;
- provide rich and frequent opportunities for students to practice what they're learning;
- provide detailed data for you to determine the effectiveness of your teaching.
In this course, we’ll explore a design process called the assessment loop, looking at the ways clear learning outcomes, thoughtfully designed assessment, and analysis of assessment results can help you engage your students and build a better course. The course covers writing clear unit-level learning goals, aligning assessments to learning goals, developing authentic summative assessments and developing formative assessments that provide rich and meaningful feedback for students. In addition, we’ll explore various assignment options in Canvas, and develop an overarching plan for using assessments in digital learning environments.
By the end of this course, you will be able to:
- Create assessments aligned to the CVC/OEI Course Design Rubric
- Create a learning unit that aligns learning objectives, outcomes, and assessments.
- Write clear and measurable student learning outcomes;
- Design a variety of valid and authentic formative and summative assessments aligned to the course outcome;
- Design student self-assessments;
- Write clear and detailed assessment instructions;
- Create clear descriptive rubrics that support desired outcomes;
- Develop an assessment plan for one unit of your course that supports regular assessment with timely, meaningful feedback.
Duration: 4 weeks, approximately 10 hours per week, for a total of 40 hours
GOTT 5: Essentials of Blended Learning (HyFlex)
In these uncertain time, it helps to have training in alternative delivery methods, so you can pivot to online teaching easily. However, blended learning is also a very viable teaching method in "normal" times (whatever they look like) as well. Research has proven that this method can combine the best of onsite and offsite teaching skills for a very positive and successful educational experience. I hope this class will provide you with the information and tools you need to feel confident as we move forward.
By the end of this course you will be able to:
- Demonstrate a well organized course based on goals and learning outcomes
- Demonstrate how online or onsite content and activities are chosen for maximum student engagement
- Demonstrate the ability to organize online or onsite content and activities that emphasize active learning
- Use assessments that measure learning and provide feedback
- Develop a plan for continual course improvement
Duration: 2 weeks, approximately 10 hours per week, for a total of 20 hours
GOTT 6: Introduction to Live Online Teaching and Learning
Engaging live sessions in online classes don’t just happen. They’re intentionally designed! By the completion of this course, you will demonstrate your ability to schedule, conduct, archive, and share a live session. You will also develop inclusive community norms and a lesson plan for a live session that uses effective instructional skills to support the diverse needs of community college students. You will achieve these goals by asynchronously engaging with content and completing assignments in Canvas, as well as attending synchronous sessions in Zoom that scaffold your learning.
By the end of the course, you will be able to:
- Demonstrate the ability to use Zoom to schedule, conduct, and record engaging live online instructional sessions.
- Demonstrate the ability to design live online instructional sessions that support community college students through active learning.
- Use recordings of live instructional sessions in compliance with student privacy, accessibility, and interaction requirements and legal recommendations.
- Develop course materials that foster inclusion for all students.
