Meet Peer Mentor: Simran Kaur
by Public Information Office on Aug 22, 2023Simran Kaur, 22, studies computer science and is in her second year at Gavilan. She chose to study computer science because she is interested in finance and needs a technical degree to enter the industry.
After graduating high school, Simran attended UC Riverside for a semester, but ultimately decided to attend Gavilan because it is close to home and can count on a support system here.
One day while between classes at Gavilan, she stumbled across a campus career fair. There, she learned about the role of peer mentors and applied for the position. She wanted to become a peer mentor because she was once a new, intimidated student who didn’t know how to navigate the campus, nor how to fill out financial aid paperwork.
“Peer mentors are students as well,” she said. “We used to have the same questions and now we have the answers to all the questions you might have due to our personal experiences. Students and their families can come to us anytime for help.”
Since starting, Simran has loved the accepting environment from her fellow peer mentors and employees in the Welcome Center.
After graduation, Simran plans to transfer to a university, then break into the finance industry and work for a hedge fund or a prop firm.
