by Public Information Office on Oct 12, 2023GILROY, CA – Gavilan College has been awarded a $3 million Title V Hispanic Serving Institution (HSI) federal Grant to create equitable education to eliminate barriers for Hispanic students. The grant allocates $600,000 annually for the next 5 years. Gavilan is a designated Hispanic Serving Institution given that more than 60% of its students are Hispanic.
Many first-generation and low-income students arrive at college unprepared. Many Hispanic and low-incomes students come to Gavilan needing support to successfully navigate the rigors of college life.
With strict guidelines and deliverables, the grant will enable Gav to serve its student body and actively engage, empower, and enrich students of all backgrounds and abilities to build their full academic, social, and economic potential. Areas of focus include dual enrollment partnerships with the local high schools and implementing a Coordinated Care Counseling Model.
The objectives of the grant will be to increase the number of dual enrollment agreements with local high schools; increase support to assist students with their educational plans; pilot a new first-year-experience program to improve student success; reduce the equity gaps for Latinx students; and improve the sense of belonging at Gavilan College for Latina/o students.
