Meet Peer Mentor: David Martinez
by Public Information Office on Aug 22, 2023David Martinez, 19, studies psychology and is in his second year at Gavilan. He joined the peer mentors in February 2023 because he loves talking to people, helping students, meeting staff, and making connections.
David chose to study psychology because he is fascinated by neuroscience and the brain’s reaction to chemical dependence. He wants to learn about the effects of addictions like drug abuse and social media, in order to help people in recovery.
David’s role as a peer mentor allows him to help Gavilan students.
“Becoming a peer mentor was the best decision,” he said. “This position is more important than people take it for. This is a job that helps. It’s more about service than a paycheck. We’re here to help all Gavilan students!”
David also liked the stability of staying in one job throughout his time at Gavilan instead of bouncing around jobs while going to school. Now, he gets to learn, share, and recommend opportunities with students at Gavilan’s beautiful campus.
After graduation, David plans to transfer to a university to continue studying neuroscience and helping others.
