Jazz Concert Kicks Off Fall Events at Gavilan College
by on Sep 8, 2017With the promise of new events on campus and in the community, the Gavilan College Educational Foundation/Alumni Relations is burning up the calendar.
How do you like your jazz?
The Foundation is partnering with the Music Department on the first annual Gavilan Jazz Fest, slated September 30 afternoon, which will fuse a musical medley of talented students and instructors. Nate Pruitt's Primary Colors, a magnet at Bach to Blues, mixes jazz and blues with musicality. Joining them for the Sunday concert, the distinct sounds of Dahveed Behroozi Quartet spice up the fall music scene. Expect the unexpected with keyboards, sax, double bass and drums.
Locally, the Gilroy High School Jazz Band brings their talented ensemble to the Gavilan theater stage. And, no matter the temperature, the San Jose State University Latin Jazz Band will bring the heat with their expanded repertoire.
Keep your ticket stub!
Take your ticket stub to participating restaurants in Downtown Gilroy for a Jazz Special following the show. Ticket holders will get discounts at three restaurants in downtown Gilroy when they show their ticket. Old City Hall will offer "buy one entree, get another entree for half price, equal or lesser value." Bella Viva will be offering half priced bottles of select Italian wines with the purchase of a pizza or salad. Milias Restaurant will offer 10% off any dinner entree (one per valid ticket stub) or "buy one, get one free" dinner appetizer - of equal or lesser value (with the exclusion of Lamb Chops, Oysters and Grilled Avocado).
Nate Pruitt's Primary Colors (left), and the San Jose State University Latin Jazz Band perform September 27 at the Gavilan College Theater. Also performing, the Dahveed Behroozi Quartet and Gilroy High School Jazz Band.
Festival goers will also be able to purchase items from the Gavilan College Art Department, and refreshments.
While you've got your calendar out, reserve September 27, 5:30 - 7:30 p.m. as well. The newly renovated Student Center on the Gilroy campus will host an open house and ribbon cutting. Haven't been on campus awhile? Come see what's changed, what's grown, and who's who at this free, community wide event.
Taking the helm six months ago, Educational Foundation/Alumni Relations Coordinator Bobbi Jo Palmer is passionate about connecting the community and getting alumni back to school, if only for a day. Often. Think of it as classes, but no quizzes. Meet up with old friends, make some new ones.
Plans for the Spring Gala are underway, so save the date. The event April 28, 2018 will feature fine food and wine along with raffle baskets, wine raffles and live auction items. Proceeds support student scholarships and activities.
Looking into the future, Gavilan College will commemorate its — drum roll, please — Centennial Anniversary. Plans are underway for a retrospective history with monthly events beginning in 2019.
If, as an alum, you have been thinking fondly about your Gavilan College days, get in touch with Palmer bpalmer@gavilan.edu for opportunities to join in these activities. Ditto if you're a business owner or resident who loves having a local college in your community.
