Assessment and Placement information

English

Español

Welcome to Gavilan College! Our job is to help you meet your educational and training goals. In order to get you into the correct, class we need to conduct an assessment.

Assessment Process

  • Please contact our support staff to fill out an application or you can fill out one online here. .
  • Our staff will schedule an appointment with you for an assessment and orientation session.
  • Several things will happen during the assessment and orientation session. First, you will receive information about our program. Then, you will be interviewed and receive a score. Next you will discuss your options with our placement specialists to help you choose classes that meet your needs and goals.
  • Our counselor is available at every assessment event to help with any of your concerns or questions.

During the first week of class, ESL instructors assess students to check that they are placed in the appropriate class. Sometimes, the assessment shows that a student is in a class that is too high or too low for their level. If this happens, the department chairs and Continuing Education Counselor discuss moving the student to another class. The team talks with the student so that any changes fit the student’s goals and English level. This level adjustment happens with very few students, less than 5% per term.

Placement Results

Here are the placement results from the Fall 2020 assessment:

PLACEMENT LEVEL % OF STUDENTS PLACED AT THIS LEVEL
Literacy 0.0%
Life Skills Level 1 14.3%
Life Skills Level 2 16.5%
Beginning 22.6%
Intermediate 1 16.5%
Intermediate 2 15.8%
Advanced 14.3%

Challenge Process

Students can challenge their level placement. Students need to take the challenge test during the registration period and up to five working days after classes start. The student must meet with the instructor of the class they want to challenge into. Instructors can’t start the challenge process. The student must request the challenge. The department chair or instructor of the challenge class will administer/give the test.

The challenge test is based on the final exam of the previous class in that strand (e.g., writing and grammar, reading and vocabulary, listening and speaking). There will be clear examples on the test so that students know what to do. Practice tests are not available for level challenges. The student and administrating teacher agree on a date to take the test. The student must score 85% or higher on the challenge test. The student must be accepted into the challenge level class if the student gets a high enough score and seats are available. The challenge test will be kept on file with the department.

ALFABETISMO 0.0%
HABILIDADES DE VIDA COTIDIANA NIVEL 1 14.3%
HABILIDADES DE VIDA COTIDIANA NIVEL 2 16.5%
INICIO 22.6%
INTERMEDIO 1 16.5%
INTERMEDIO 2 15.8%
AVANZADO 14.3%
