BARC2019
GECA Team (Jess Fan, Briana Lemon, Hunter Pittman, Andrew Dinh):
The Bay Area Regionals Competition, is an annual event that displays and challenges student teams who have participated in the current season of Cyber Security Competitions within the Bay Area Community College Consortium. Our GECA team began training over the summer through the cybersecurity camps ran by Gavilan College (Alex Stoykov), and taught by our Computer Science Club Treasurer Marisol Arredondo and President Jeron Wong.
On February 23rd, 2019 four of our GECA students participated in the Bay Area Regionals Competition, going up against 10 other high schools to win over judges in a consultation interview. The students were given a scenario of a company whom recently suffered a security breach. The goal was to be hired by this company through a trial project; updating the current infrastructure and implementing best security and operational practices while maintaining the specific company settings, software and data intact.
Our team of GECA students represented Gavilan in the HS division, and took 3rd in the BARC2019 Competition! It was their first time competing this year and they were able to more than hold their own against many other quality veteran teams. Our GECA team also beat MPC's ten teams during the advanced week camp of the summer 2018 mock competition ;)
Note From Students: Thank you to our coach Marisol Arredondo (Gavilan Student, CS Club treasurer) who represented our team, Alex Stoykov (Gavilan Professor) for holding the many camps that got us interested in the cybersecurity field, and last but not least we would like to thank Irvin Lemus (BACCC Coordinator) for training this team and helping them to competitions when it seemed like we couldn't make it. Once again the Cyber Protectors would like to thank all of you for giving us a chance and allowing us to represent Gavilan in both BARC2019, the Air Force Association's Cyber Patriot, and PICOctf.
