Past Exhibitions - Beyond + Back: New Works on Paper by Ema Harris-Sintamarian
The Gavilan College Art Gallery is pleased to present Beyond + Back: Works on Paper by Ema Harris-Sintamarian.
Ema Harris-Sintamarian’s work is characterized by riotous abstract imagery that is machine-like in its execution, but the artist’s hand is present in every mark.
Born and raised in Romania, she emigrated to the United States in her early 20’s. Her intricate, densely layered imagery references the work of the Italian Futurists, but is entirely contemporary in its deployment of color and form.
A hybrid of European Modernism and American maximalism, the work describes in visceral visual form the sense of dislocation experienced as an immigrant. The dichotomies of tension and release, order and chaos, past and future are mapped out, taking the viewer on a high-spirited ride through her mental landscape.
Ema Harris-Sintamarian has exhibited her work extensively in both national and international venues. She is a recipient of the Eureka Fleishaaker Fellowship, the New York Artist Grant, and the Silicon Valley Arts Council award, to name a few. She has participated in numerous residencies, including Djerassi Resident Artists Program, Vermont Studio Center, AIR Krems, and WARP. She received her MFA in Printmaking from the University of Delaware and a second MFA from San Jose State University in Pictorial Arts. She is an adjunct professor at San Jose City College.
Beyond and Back: Works on Paper by Ema Harris-Sintamarian will be on view in the Gavilan College Gallery from October 19 - December 14, 2016.
