Shaping Gavilan's Future: Governance Task Force Update
Dear Gavilan Community,
We're excited to share an update on the Governance Task Force, a group dedicated to strengthening Gavilan's decision-making processes and ensuring everyone's voices are heard.
Why a Task Force?
You might recall we hosted a college Governance Retreat in the Fall of 2023. One key takeaway was the need to review our governance structure. That's why we formed this task force, composed of students, faculty, classified professionals, and administrators – a true cross-section of our college community!
Meet the Task Force Champions!
Leading this initiative is a dedicated group that represents each of our college constituents:
- Students: Ysabella Johnson, Mikhaila-Joi Tamondong, Gisel Villareal
- Faculty: Dr. Blanca Arteaga, Jessica Gatewood, Cherise Mantia, Megan Wong
- Classified Professionals: Connie Phillips, Elizabeth San Ramon
- Administrators: Lucy Alvarez, Dr. Pedro Avila, Dr. Renee Craig-Marius
What's on the Agenda?
The task force began meeting in December, and they have met four times thus far. With the help of an expert facilitator, the group has identified the following goals for Spring 2024:
- Begin development of a District governance manual
- Glossary of Terms
- Committee membership roles and expectations
- Identification of templates
- Map existing governance committees
- Collect existing committee bylaws and/or charges
- Survey the Gavilan community regarding their experiences with participatory governance
- Provide ongoing communication to the Gavilan community regarding task force work and progress
The task force intends to streamline our governance structure and make it more efficient, transparent, and inclusive for everyone at Gavilan.
Guiding Principles: The task force is committed to equity, efficiency, clarity, transparency, and participation. These principles will guide their recommendations.
