Faculty Hiring Decisions & Early Retirement Incentive Plan
Dear Gavilan College Community,
After carefully considering the recommendations of the Academic Staffing Committee (ASC), I am delighted to announce the approval of three full-time faculty positions. These positions will be in:
- Ethnic Studies
- General Counseling
- History
Recruitment for these positions will commence in spring 2025, with the goal of welcoming new colleagues in fall 2025.
I also want to share some exciting news. The Board of Trustees recently approved an early retirement incentive plan to recognize and thank our dedicated employees for their years of service. This plan is available to all full-time employees reaching age 60 with 10 years of full-time service at Gavilan College by July 1, 2025, or July 1, 2026. Our Human Resources department has contacted all eligible employees with detailed information about this opportunity.
As some faculty members take advantage of this well-deserved retirement opportunity, it's essential to understand that the process for replacing faculty positions will follow our established procedures through ASC.
While we deeply value all of our faculty and are committed to replacing faculty vacancies, we must strategically allocate resources to best meet the evolving needs of our students. Therefore, faculty vacancies resulting from the early retirement incentive will not be automatically filled. The department must work with its Dean to submit a request to ASC. All requests will be carefully reviewed and prioritized through the Academic Staffing Committee process. This process ensures that we are allocating resources to the areas of greatest student demand and where we can maximize our impact on student learning and success.
Department Deans and Chairs will be notified by March 3rd if their department has a faculty vacancy due to early retirement. The Academic Staffing Committee will provide a spring semester staffing request cycle to allow for the review, ranking, and recommendation of full-time faculty positions. This transparent and collaborative process ensures that we are making data-informed decisions that support our students and the future of Gavilan College.
A similar review process by management will occur for all non-faculty vacancies resulting from the early retirement incentive.
This is an exciting time for Gavilan College. We are investing in our future by replacing and adding new positions while recognizing and appreciating our long-serving employees' contributions. I am confident that these initiatives will strengthen our academic programs and continue to provide our students with the highest quality education and student support services.
Kind Regards,
Dr. Pedro Avila
