Meet Peer Mentor: Kristiana Stricker
by on Jan 9, 2023Why did you choose to attend Gavilan College?
I chose Gavilan because it’s close to home and I did not want to travel far to a university/college. A former high school staff member told me she got her schooling done at Gavilan to become a paraprofessional aide.
What do you like most about Gavilan College?
I like the different events that are offered throughout the year on campus each semester whether they be educational, access to resources or just simply to enjoy yourself. Plus, the campus consists of diversity and inclusiveness. There is always something for everyone when they come to campus. And the staff members are nice and helpful.
What motivated you to become a Peer Mentor?
Ever since I was involved in the 4-H Youth Development program for 13 years I always had a passion for helping others in my community. When I saw the duties for the peer mentor role, I knew I saw myself being involved in this role. And I knew it could inspire other new or returning students who had trouble in similar situations and needed to get answers quickly.
What do you enjoy most about your role?
I enjoy working with Michele who helps guide me in helping students that come in with their questions. I also enjoy working with my other peer mentors who collaborate with me and support me when I need it. Overall, just some of the new or returning students who acknowledge the hard work and dedication that we do as peer mentors, is very rewarding to me. I like to go above and beyond to help the students. I like to make the students and staff that come in feel welcome and understood and for them not have to wait. Lastly, I enjoy working as a team to get the job done.
What are you studying at Gavilan?
I am studying Child Development.
What is your goal?
My goal is to graduate from Gavilan and get my AA degree and head off to work as a paraprofessional aide full time in a school district close to home.
Where did you grow up? What high school?
I grew up in Hollister but was born in Gilroy. I attended what was formerly known as San Benito High School but is now called Hollister High School.
Any last words?
Yo soy Gavilan. I am Gavilan.
