About Me
It has been my joy to teach at Gavilan College for more than twenty years where I have focused on composition, creative writing, and critical thinking here on our main campus and at the San Benito County Jail in Hollister.
I believe writing is a physical experience as much as a mental one. That’s why I design our classroom activities for maximum engagement of mind, body, and spirit including lots of interaction, experimentation, and play. This helps us learn more deeply, gain fluency as readers and writers, and achieve meta-cognitive awareness applicable in multiple areas of our lives.
I attended Hartnell Community College in Salinas, where I grew up, and subsequently received degrees from California Institute of the Arts, Columbia University, and Warren Wilson College.
In addition to my work as a teacher, I am a writer at work on a novel about the later lives of Hansel and Gretel and formerly worked as a journalist in New York City, Maine, and here in California.
