Personal Bio
As an army brat, Monica traveled and lived all over Europe and the US, finally settling in central Illinois where she earned her BA in French and Political Science and MA in Teaching English as a Second Language at Southern Illinois University - Carbondale. She also attended the Université de Franche Comté in Besançon, France her junior year in college. She taught English in Normandy, France and Illinois, and after moving to the Northwest to teach at Pacific Lutheran University, she met and married her French husband and had three children, now 22, 21, and 20 years of age. Ms. Herzi relocated to NorCal eight years ago and is starting her seventh semester at Gavilan College. Her interests include social justice, reading in all forms, writing, cheesy television shows, family games, traveling, and hiking with Rufus - her nine year-old Viszla dog.
Monica is currently involved in the Reading Apprenticeship with 3CSN and Equity work at Gavilan. She has attended the annual Reading Apprenticeship conference, the Basic Skills Initiative Leadership Institute, the Reading Apprenticeship - First Year Experience workshop, and the Growth Mindset Institute, and is currently a part of the RA Leadership Community of Practice. She is committed to educational excellence and to Gavilan College's Principles of Community: valuing the worth and dignity of every person, the pursuit of truth, devotion to excellence, acquisition of knowledge, and democratic citizenship while maintaining these ideals in an environment of inclusiveness and mutual respect. She completed the reading certificate program at CSU Fullerton and teaches French at Gavilan at San Jose City College.
