Homeless & Housing Insecure Program - HHIP
If you are experiencing any housing insecurities such as the examples below, you may be eligible for HHIP services:
- Falling behind on rent
- Homeless, couch surfing, or living in your car
- Need help paying for a move-in cost (deposit/first month’s rent)
Program Eligibility to Apply
Currently enrolled in 6 credit units or more OR Enrolled in NonCredit units.
Housing Assistance Process
Step 1: Basic Needs Referral
Step 2: Submit all Housing Eligibility Requirements
You will receive an email from El Centro within 7-10 business days including the additional eligibility requirements. Please keep in mind deadlines are time sensitive. Missed deadlines will cause delays in communication and housing assistance. Also please note, funding is limited, and assistance is not guaranteed.
Rental or Moving Assistance
- Submit a 24-25 FAFSA or CADAA (Unless you’re enrolled in NonCredit units)
- Submit your rental agreement/lease/mortgage
- Submit a 3-Month Budget
- Take 1 Financial Literacy Workshop

Step 3: Application Evaluation
El Centro will verify the information provided or inform you about missing paperwork. If you are homeless, El Centro will refer you to our partner agency the Compassion Center (Santa Clara Residents).
Step 4: Denial or Award Letter
After reviewing your application, you will receive an email from El Centro letting you know whether you have been denied or awarded housing assistance. If you are denied assistance, you will be provided with an explanation and community resources. If awarded housing assistance, you will receive an email letting you know you need to meet with Ana as your last step. One you meet with Ana an award letter will be sent to your email letting you know the amount, and date of disbursement.
Step 5: Verify Mailing Address (If awarded)
Your check will be mailed to the address Gavilan College has on file. If you need to edit your mailing address, please do so in your Self-Service Banner student account.
