CD 2:    Early Child Development

A systematic study of the child from prenatal life through the preschool years. The course integrates the basic concepts of physical, cognitive and psychosocial development at each major stage of life during this period. This course is also listed as PSYC 2.

CD 4:    Observation and Assessment Techniques
Advisory: Eligible for English 250 and English 260; completion of Child Development 2.

Provides training in a variety of observation strategies and formal assessment methodologies to strengthen the student's awareness of child development. Observations of children will be required.

Patterns of child-rearing in contemporary society. Interaction of family, school and community. Significance of personal and social values in family life and community action. Individual and social resources for family life including health, welfare and improving child development.

CD 7:    Cultural Context of Childhood
Advisory: Eligible for English 250 and English 260.

This course examines cultural influences on child-rearing practices, family values, and human development. Perspectives from the social sciences will be used to explore what is common to all Homo sapiens and what is specific to the culture of the U.S. Students will explore their own personal assumptions and attitudes towards diversity, and practice implementing non-stereotypical, developmentally appropriate, anti-bias activities, interactions and environments in order to respond to and intervene against prejudice among children. This course is also listed as PSYC 7 and ANTH 9.

CD 8A:    American Education in a Changing World
Transferable: CSU
This course provides an overview of education in the United States. It examines the issues, problems, and solutions to teaching in a pluralistic society by viewing schools as social institutions that reflect the values and dynamics of a society. It focuses on the history, politics, theories and approaches to teaching culturally and linguistically diverse children and analyzes career opportunities and new directions in education. For students who wish to expand their knowledge of education in America, and those who wish to explore careers in teaching. This course includes a Service Learning component that will encourage students to explore and apply concepts from the class. This course has the option of a letter grade or credit/no credit.

CD 9:    Child Health, Nutrition and Safety
Advisory: Eligible for English 250 and English 260.
Transferable: CSU
The health protection provided to young children by the home, school and community is studied. Topics included are nutrition, common childhood diseases and special health problems, management of accidents and injury, and safety concerns. Students will also learn methods of teaching personal hygiene, nutrition, poison prevention, and fire safety, and become familiar with community health and safety resources.

CD 11A:    Administration of Programs for Young Children
Advisory: Child Development 1 and 2.
Transferable: CSU
The principles and practices of the organization and administration of facilities for preschool aged children. Areas covered include organizational structure, budgeting, personnel policies and practices, records, statistics, reporting, relationship with community resources, regulatory agencies, and parents.

CD 12:    Computer Education for Teachers
Advisory: CSIS 122 Computer Keyboarding, or equivalent; English 250 with a grade of C or better.
Transferable: CSU
The history, development and uses of computers in education. Basic computer skills and terminology will be taught in context of teacher education. Students who complete this course satisfactorily will understand the general and specific knowledge and skills required to meet the Technology Standard for Multiple and Single Subject Credential Candidates. This course has the option of a letter grade or credit/no credit. This course is also listed as CSIS 9.

CD 14A:    Working with School Age Children
Advisory: Eligible for English 250 and 260. Child Development 3.
Transferable: CSU
Students will learn the developmental characteristics of school aged children, issues relating to before and after school programs for children from kindergarten to grade eight, and specific details of administering and leading such a program. Other topics include recreation versus academic enrichment, staffing requirements, age groupings, program content, and community resources. This course has the option of a letter grade or credit/no credit.

CD 15:    Exploring Music with Children

Techniques for helping the non-musician to express emotions and ideas in a musical fashion, practice in building simple rhythm instruments and using rhythm in song instruction. An extensive discography and bibliography will be provided each student.

An overview of Department of Social Services and Department of Education regulations regarding child care workers in California. Self-assessment techniques with emphasis on teacher-child and teacher-adult relationships and personal evaluations. Basic principles of curriculum development and discipline techniques. CD 20:    Children's Language and Literature

A developmental view of children's language and literacy learning in a framework of children's literature. Students will be presented with steps in children's literacy learning in order to help them organize classrooms and plan activities to support the growth of writing and reading. Students will study historical trends in children's literature and participate in practical experiences and activities that use a wide range of techniques and materials for advancing language comprehension and usage.

CD 21:    Creative Experiences for Children
Advisory: Eligible for English 250 and English 260.

An interpretation of the values of creative experiences for young children. Illustrated lectures and demonstrations with student participation cover such topics as use of blocks, music, rhythms, body movement, art experiences and other creative projects.

CD 22:    Field Work and Service
Required: Learning contracts must be filled out and signed by the student and the supervising instructor.
Transferable: CSU
Supervised field work within the college and with local agencies. Students serve in useful group activities in leadership roles prescribed for them by faculty or community agencies. A maximum of six units may be completed.

CD 23:    Independent Study
Required: The study outline prepared by the student and the instructor must be approved by the department and the dean.

Designed to afford selected students specialized opportunities for exploring areas at the independent study level. The courses may involve extensive library work, research in the community, or special projects. May be repeated three times or until six units of credit are accrued. This course has the option of a letter grade or credit/no credit.

CD 28C:    Administering A Family Child Care Home

Learning to establish and enforce contracts and policies with the parents of children you care for. Strategies and sample forms will be discussed with examples and suggestions for use. Six 3-hour sessions, or may be taught on three Saturdays.

CD 30A:    Teaching Practices and Techniques
Advisory: Completion of Child Development 1 and 2 with a "C" or higher. Concurrent enrollment in CD 190.
Transferable: CSU
Designing, developing and implementing contemporary curriculum and instructional methods for early childhood education. Completion of 30A and 30B satisfies the associate degree requirement for student teaching.

CD 190:    Occupational Work Experience/Child Development
Required: Declared vocational major. Concurrent enrollment in seven or more units (including CWE units, except for summer school. For summer school, enrollment in one other class is required). Minimum 2.00 G.P.A.
Transferable: CSU
College credit for learning experience obtained on the job in accordance with a training plan developed cooperatively between the employer, college and student. 75 hours per semester per unit or 60 hours per semester for unpaid experience. This is a credit/no credit course. May be taken for a maximum of 16 work experience units.
