CD 7 | Cultural Context of Childhood |
This course examines cultural influences on child-rearing practices, family values, and human development. Perspectives from the social sciences will be used to explore what is common to all Homo sapiens and what is specific to the culture of the U.S. Students will explore their own personal assumptions and attitudes towards diversity, and practice implementing non-stereotypical, developmentally appropriate, anti-bias activities, interactions and environments in order to respond to and intervene against prejudice among children. This course is also listed as PSYC 7 and ANTH 9. |

It focuses on the history, politics, theories and approaches to teaching culturally and linguistically diverse children and analyzes career opportunities and new directions in education. This course is designed to teach prospective teachers how a child learns to read and write successfully in school. Specific techniques will be taught. Students will be expected to register concurrently in 1-4 units of CD 190--Cooperative Work Experience in order to facilitate opportunities to work regularly with children. This course has the option of a letter grade or credit/no credit. |

CD 9 | Child Health, Nutrition and Safety |
The health protection provided to young children by the home, school and community is studied. Topics included are nutrition, common childhood diseases and special health problems, management of accidents and injury, and safety concerns. Students will also learn methods of teaching personal hygiene, nutrition, poison prevention, and fire safety, and become familiar with community health and safety resources. |

CD 11C | Supervision of Adults: The Mentor Teacher |
A study of the methods and principles of supervising assistant teachers, parents and other adults in early childhood classrooms. Emphasis is on the role of the experienced classroom teacher who functions as a "mentor/supervisor" to student teachers, teacher aides, assistant teachers, and other adults in the classroom, while simultaneously addressing the needs of children and parents. This course meets the state requirements for a "2 unit adult supervision course" for the master teacher, program director, and site director permit. It also meets the necessary prerequisite course for those wishing to apply to the Mentor Teacher Program. |
Advisory: | Prefer that students meet the requirements for the State Child Development Teacher Permit or completion of a college-level course of study in child development or early childhood education, or equivalent, or permission of instructor. |

A developmental view of children's language and literacy learning in a framework of children's literature. Service Learning is a method through which community participation, academic subjects, skills, and awareness are linked. Through a combination of community-based learning experiences, reading and writing assignments, and classroom-based learning experiences, this course seeks to foster the development of self-reflective, culturally aware and responsive community participants. Students will complete a minimum of 30 hours of community service work during the semester. This course has the option of a letter grade or credit/no credit. |
