4) Gavilan Nine Hole Golf Course with Wadsworth Golf Charities Foundation

Leon McNair, President of the Board of Directors for the Wadsworth Golf Charities Foundation, provided the history of the Foundation, its purpose, and how the Foundation has partnered with a number of different consulting groups. The groups together provide the type of services for design and construction needed for a nine hole golf course such as Gavilan. George Maxe, Executive Director for The First Tee, San Jose Chapter, provided an overview of the history and purpose of the First Tee program. He highlighted, in particular, that the program is really about youth development through golf rather than the emphasis being strictly on golf. Don DeLorenzo, manager of Gavilan Golf, provided an overview of the current layout and design of the Gavilan Golf course with input from both Leon and George.

Leon, George, and Don spoke about some creative options that the District might explore if the golf course was redesigned. One example was a design with a 3-hole loop for First Tee use and a 6-hole loop for regular customers. The design would also allow for 9-hole use. In addition, Leon stressed that a number of short courses have been designed to include a higher level accessibility for users.

In discussing the next step, Leon indicated that a master plan, with a number of options and ideas, needs to be developed by the Foundation consultants. At the same time, the Foundation consultants also provide a ten year business plan to assess viability. These front end services are all paid for by the pro-bono contributions from the various consultants that the foundation has partnered with. The Districts only obligation, at this point, is to provide basic 'topo' maps, property line information, etc. The Board Facility Committee authorized the administration to proceed with the front end work.

5) Campus Equipment Enclosures

The Committee reviewed the following information included in the agenda packets: Minute excerpts from various Health, Safety, Facility and Grounds Committee meetings dealing with the enclosures; a copy of the BP/AP 6500 Property Management which includes information for physical facilities, and aesthesis and public art; and, photographs of a few of the enclosures. The Committee did not think the mural proposal was the proper solution for beautifying the enclosures. Joe indicated that he would contact Marla Dresch and Arturo Rosette to let them know the Committee's decision.

6) Other

Joe reviewed that since the update at their May 10 Board Committee meeting, he had another meeting with representatives from the GUSD regarding the Gilroy Early College Academy (GECA) relocation. At that meeting, there was a consensus not put GECA at the south entrance of the college. The discussion centered instead on a plan to expand GECA at their current location with the following major elements: Expand the current GECA area in front of portables 7, 8, and 9 out into parking lot C; make the south front entrance (dirt area) of the college a parking lot to make up for the displacement of parking created by the GECA expansion; and, create a road from parking lot C in front of the duck pond and change the traffic flow in and out of Lot C. When further information is available, Joe will bring it back to the Committee for their review; including a marquee for Gavilan College.
