4) Relocation of Gilroy Early College Academy (GECA)

Joe reviewed that several potential locations had already been discussed for the relocation of the GECA program. At the last Board Facilities Committee meeting, it was agreed to hire a CEQA consultant to look into the environmental issues related to the building of a road east of the duck pond and in front of the large Gavilan wall. This road would ease traffic flow and accommodate the expansion of the GECA program and the existing GECA portables (Plan B).

Rebecca Wright, Assistant Superintendent of Business Services at Gilroy Unified School District (GUSD), and their architect, Marty Hochroth, provided Joe with a Plan C for Gavilan's consideration. Joe handed out the GUSD provided site plans. GUSD has expressed their desire to have their own campus with safe vehicle and pedestrian traffic. Many topics were discussed including:

  • Aesthetics of site especially as it is entrance and first impression of the campus (fences and portables);
  • Why is a fence needed and what would it look like;
  • Plan would need to be part of CEQA study;
  • Improvement on traffic flow and a drop off loop for GECA students;
  • Need to work out details for motorcycle classes that currently use that lot space;
  • Budget: Gavilan $500,000 (some of which will be used to demolish the old police academy portables and CJ500) and GUSD $3 million;
  • Use of Gavilan color palette;
  • Need to discuss lease terms;
  • Are there any Caltrans issues for Santa Teresa Boulevard; and,
  • Site leased needs to be ready for occupancy.

Joe asked the Committee if he could include the GECA site Plan C into the CEQA scope and the Committee agreed. Joe noted that he will contact GUSD staff concerning the Committee's discussion.

5) Adjournment Meeting adjourned at 5:34 p.m. MSC (Breen/Dover)

Please help keep Gavilan College a litter-free campus and preserve its park-like setting.
Thank you.
