2) Comments from the Public: Stan Botto, CSEA President, is in attendance on behalf of the bargaining unit.

3) Discussion Item(s):

  1. Discussion of Physical education Full Time Positions

    Steve reported that the College is in the process of implementing the Five Year Full Time Faculty Hiring Plan and the physical education position is on the list. Ron reported that he has been working with the physical education department staff in reviewing enrollments and the impact of the investigation of the Office of Civil Rights (OCR).

    Summary of feedback and recommendation from the physical education department regarding full time position: The baseball program position has the potential to generate more FTES, however, because of the OCR investigation; there may be a concern about the impact of position. The OCR does not have the authority to say which position should be hired, but they can make recommendations. Ron distributed statistics on participation by sport in athletic programs since 1999 noting that the men’s’ programs are fairly stable, while women’s programs have gone up and down. Based on this information, staff input, and the OCR investigation, Ron is recommending a women’s head coach position. The plan is to consider various programs, including swimming or water polo.

    Mark noted that if the college is comprised of 60% female and 40% male, programs should be geared toward women, however, Title IX was written for gender equity and it is hard to support programs that have forfeited games. Ron stated that it has been difficult to attract strong women’s coaches. Mark acknowledged that Volleyball was a great move, but believes soccer is a weak program. Steve stated that he will have a better idea about the impact on this from the state budget in about one week. Steve stated that the Board could consider an academic and physical education position. Stan stated that CSEA would probably not have a problem with supporting this recommendation.

    Trustee Washington reported that the Board Athletic Committee met on Jan. 4. In keeping with the commitment that was made to the community by the Board, three years ago, it has recommended the hiring of a full time baseball coach. The Committee also recommended that the next round of hiring would start with a female full time physical education faculty member. The sports under consideration would be volleyball, soccer, or water sports.

Mark also requested that the College work on improving the transfer rate of athletes to 4 year universities.

4) Adjourned. Meeting adjourned at 4:47 p.m.
