Designed to afford selected students specialized opportunities for exploring areas at the independent study level. The courses may involve extensive library work, research in the community, or special projects. May be repeated until six units of credit are accrued.

PL 110 Introduction to Paralegalism
This course is designed to provide a general overview of the legal system with emphasis on the procedural duties of the paralegal within that system. The course will specifically address such areas as legal analysis, legal research, legal writing and law office administration, as well as provide an overview of several substantive areas of law. This is the first class in the Paralegal Program.

PL 112A Legal Research and Writing
Students will learn research techniques, become acquainted with a wide variety of standard law library resources, and be introduced to computerized legal research techniques. Students will receive an introduction to legal briefing and analytical techniques to be used in the preparation of interoffice memorandums.

PL 114 Family Law
An introduction to family law with an emphasis on (1) practical applications and (2) California procedures--students will study the Judicial Council Forms and the following issues and topics in family law: child support, child custody, spousal support, California adoption procedures, marital termination agreements, separation agreements, and paternity proceedings.

PL 130 Law Office Practice
Simulated job experience in the classroom setting allowing the student the opportunity to develop actual casework skills under the direct supervision of the instructor. Students will have the opportunity to work on several different types of cases from the original intake to completion of the legal matter. This is a credit/no credit course.
 
Advisory: Completion of 15 units in Paralegal Studies Program and CSIS 169; or evaluation by instructor.

PL 190 Occupational Work Experience/Paralegal Studies
College credit for learning experience obtained on the job in accordance with a training plan developed cooperatively between the employer, college and student. 75 hours per semester per unit or 60 hours per semester for unpaid experience. This is a credit/no credit course.
 
Required: Declared vocational major. Concurrent enrollment in seven or more units (including CWE units, except for summer school. For summer school, enrollment in one other class is required). Minimum 2.00 GPA.
