About Gavilan SSSI

In October 2008, Gavilan College was awarded a 3.5 million dollar CCRAA-HSI grant. Its purpose is to increase the number of Hispanic and other underrepresented minorities attaining degrees in the fields of science, technology, engineering and mathematics and to develop model transfer and articulation agreements between 2-year Hispanic-serving institutions and 4-year institutions in such fields. This grant provided us with funds to refurbish our science labs with new equipment, purchase computers, fund a massive tutoring effort, support student internships and hire a dedicated STEM counselor.

The positive impact of the activities funded by this grant on student success motivated the Gavilan College Natural Sciences Department to take a fresh and innovative look at the infrastructure necessary to attract and sustain STEM majors.

The result of this analysis is the STEM Student Success Initiative (SSSI).
