Two "WILD!"
and
fantasy-filled adventures:
“WILD!” is inspired by the imagination of Maurice Sendak, author of Where The Wild Things Are. “WILD!” tells the story of the “wild things” and follows their emotional journey after a misfit child, Max, sails out of his bedroom and into the land of the wild things. The monsters take center stage in this fantasy-filled adventure as they “rompus” in song and dance and accept Max as their king. This energetic workshop production examines what it means to be a child, a king, a monster, and a friend. This summer, STAR is very excited to have veteran STAR leader, Mr. Javier Hurtado, return to direct STAR San Juan Bautista participants in his newly written play, “WILD!” He is an experienced playwright, stage manager, and director. The cast is made up of youth from ages eight to sixteen who have been learning important theatre and production skills over the course of three weeks in order to present a full production at the end of the camp. Each child enrolled has been given a role in the production and has also learned essential elements about backstage work, including prop and set work. One brilliant example is the use of shadow puppets in the piece, which the students have handcrafted and use as integral visual elements in the show. The Gavilan College Summer Theatre Arts Repertory (STAR) Program has been offering quality theatre and TV performing arts summer day camps for youth (ages 8-16) since 1985. STAR is a safe place for creative expression and has transformed hundreds of children’s lives by helping to boost their confidence and poise; encouraging their creative spirits; teaching them collaboration, teamwork, and respect. |
