LTI Guidelines and Policy
LTI (Learning Tools Interoperability) is the method by which we integrate outside services and products into iLearn. These tools vary in depth, complexity, and information sharing. Some examples are: gateways to textbook publisher sites, interactive video, Google Docs, Turnitin, and more.
Canvas defines 4 levels of privacy. An LTI tool will connect on one of these levels:
- Anonymous: no identifying information about the user is sent to the vendor
- Email Only: The user's email is the only identifying information sent to the vendor.
- Name Only: The user's name is the only identifying information sent to the vendor.
- Public: Various identifying information (name, email, Canvas ID, SIS ID of the course, SIS ID of user, etc.) is sent to the vendor.
An LTI tool may also have the ability to transmit information back to iLearn. Usually this is in the form of a grade or record.
Guidelines to consider when evaluating a new LTI / Vendor
- What are the fields which are passed to the tool?
- Are grades and/or files passed back to Canvas?
- Is the tool accessible / 508 compliant? Has the vendor provided a VPAT which we have on file?
- Is the vendor reputable? Do we know anything about the conditions where they are storing data?
- Company longevity and history
- Geographic location
- Any behavior or news stories involving them
- Has the contract, Terms of Service, End-User Licensing Agreement and/or any other conditions which the school/faculty/students will be bound to, been reviewed and found to be satisfactory?
Example: Turnitin assumes ownership of student content. - Will the tool require resources or support from any unit on campus?
