Creative Catalyst III: Artists who Teach

WHO: Artist-educators who teach at Gavilan College, Gilroy High School, Live Oak High School, and San Benito High School

WHAT: Are exhibiting the work they do when they are not teaching. The show includes painting, sculpture, and digital media, and photography.

WHERE: Gavilan College main gallery, in the library building,
Gilroy campus, 5055 Santa Teresa Blvd.

WHEN: Now through January 16th, 2004. The gallery hours are Monday through Thursday: 8:00 a.m. - 6:00 p.m.,
Friday: 8:00 a.m. - 2:00 p.m., closed Saturday and Sunday

CURATOR'S STATEMENT: "Artists who teach often are confronted with the predicament of having to create for their own well-being (sanity) and wanting to share that inspiration and journey with their students. Ideally, artists who teach are able to maintain a balance between their creating and teaching lives. Unfortunately that is not always possible, especially considering recent education reforms that impose added responsibilities on teachers: larger classes, state mandated standards, dwindling resources.

"We invite you to experience this exhibition in that context. The artwork presented was created by artists that not only continue treading a creative path of discovery, turmoil and insight, but somehow muster up the energy to, day in and day out, struggle with (new) ways to share those experiences with their students and community."
