At the August meeting of the Gavilan College Board of Trustees, The Department of Kinesiology & Athletics announced that the 2012-13 Gavilan College Student-Athlete of the Year Award (presented by Famous Dave’s Legendary Pit BBQ) goes to Josh Gonzalez of the men’s soccer team.
In 2008-09, the Rams Athletic Department teamed up with Famous Dave’s and Articulate Solutions to honor student-athletes for their accomplishments on and off the field.
The selection process pays special attention to four specific areas: academic achievement, leadership; athletic contributions; and involvement in the community. Over the course of the 2012-13 academic year, 24 individual student-athletes were recognized for their accomplishments as student-athletes of the month. As a result, each was honored with a certificate of recognition, compliments of Articulate Solutions, and a $25 gift certificate from Famous Dave’s. Their names were also added to a perpetual plaque that will be proudly displayed in the foyer of the Bud & Jean Ottmar Memorial Gymnasium.
This year’s recipient of the 2012-13 Student-Athlete of the Year Award goes to Josh Gonzalez of the men’s soccer team. Josh had a cumulative grade point average of 3.3 during the academic year. He was recognized as a two-time Dean’s scholar as well as a scholar-athlete.
Josh’s play on the field spoke for itself. This 1st Team All Coast Conference selection scored 5 goals and had 8 assists on the season. His versatility allowed him to be used by Coach Johnson in a multitude of ways resulting in significant playing time at 9 of 11 different positions this year. He was a key ingredient in helping the Rams secure its first appearance in the CCCAA State Regional Playoffs in school history and was instrumental in its 1-0 win against Modesto Junior College in the first round allowing the team to advance to the second round. Additionally his play on the field this year helped the Rams set a school record for most wins in a season with an overall record of 12-7-4 and 7-3-4 in Coast Conference play. Also, with his help, the Rams finished the year ranked #21 in state and #10 in NorCal.
As an active member in the community, Josh has worked as a camp leader for the YMCA and has been instrumental in seeing our very own Gavilan College soccer camps and clinics be successful. As a result of his hard work and determination, Josh will be attending Chico State in the fall where he’ll continue his studies in Kinesiology and playing soccer for the Wildcats during the 2013 season.
