Gavilan College student Herman “Al” Tyler recognized for winning 2010 California State Fair highest honors in industrial technology.
Gavilan College, CA: At the December meeting of the Gavilan College Board of Trustees, Gavilan College Vice President of Instruction Kathleen Rose presented a Certificate of Recognition from Congressman Mike Honda to Gavilan College Career Technology Education (CTE) student Herman "Al" Tyler for earning the Golden Bear Trophy at the State Fair for excellence in Industrial Design.
Last spring Gilroy resident Tyler enrolled in a Computer Graphics & Design course offered by the CTE Department at Gavilan College to learn how to use SolidWorks--an industry standard for parametric software used for computer aided drafting/design (CAD). Mr. Tyler spent the semester designing, rendering and animating 3D models of his boat that expands from 8 ft. width--necessary for land transport-to 12 feet width to provide better stability and more comfort when fishing. Resulting SolidWorks 3D models of his dual width boat earned him California State Fair’s 2010 Industrial and Technology Education Competition Best of Show Golden Bear Trophy. United States Representative Mike Honda, an advocate for technology and education, submitted the certificate via Mr. Tyler’s Instructor, Colette Marie McLaughlin.
Dr. McLaughlin recognized the teamwork that supported “Al” Tyler’s design talents, “Al produced his incredible project with resources made possible from California taxpayers through their representatives, the trustees of Gavilan College and Mike Honda, our 15th District Congress Member, and their ongoing support for the caliber of Career Technical Education learning environments that prepare students for success in today’s extremely competitive workforce.”
