RAMS ATHLETICS NAMES TESSA FISCHER 2009-10 STUDENT-ATHLETE OF THE YEAR

GAVILAN COLLEGE - At the July 13, 2010 meeting of the Board of Trustees, Director of Athletics, Ron Hannon, announced this year’s recipient of the 2009-10 Student-Athlete of Year Award.

During the 2009-10 year, the Rams Athletic Department teamed up with Famous Dave’s Legendary Pit Bar-B-Que and Articulate Solutions to honor its student-athletes for their accomplishments on and off the field.  Special attention was paid specifically to four areas: academic achievement, athletic contributions, leadership and involvement in the community.

This year’s recipient of the 2009-10 Student-Athlete of the Year Award goes to Tessa Fischer of the women’s volleyball team.  During this past year, Tessa earned a cumulative grade point average of 3.94 while attempting AND passing ALL 37 units.  This helped improve her overall cumulative GPA to a 3.91.  She was named to the President’s List in both semesters as well as being named to the Scholar-Athlete List after both terms.

In volleyball, Fischer helped lead the Rams to an overall record of 17-7 and 9-1 in Coast Conference play, locking up Gavilan’s first ever Coast Conference Championship.  The Rams also made their first trip to the CCCAA NorCal Regional Playoffs.  As a result of her individual success this season, Fischer was named as a 1st Team All Coast Conference selection.

Nationally, Fischer also received recognition when she was named as a 2010 NATYCAA Scholar-Athlete Honorable Mention. The National Alliance of Two Year College Athletic Administrators each year recognizes the nation’s top student-athletes who best demonstrate outstanding accomplishment and leadership in academics, athletics and citizenship.  Fischer was one of only 20 women nation wide to receive this honor.

In the community, Fischer served Gavilan College proudly as an active volunteer with the Bay Area Women’s Sports Initiative (BAWSI) after school program.  As a coach and role model for 3rd-5th grade girls at Rod Kelley Elementary school in Gilroy, Fischer and her teammates provided positive reinforcement through games and physical activity to over 50 participants.

Over the course of the past year, 21 individual student-athletes were recognized for their accomplishments as student-athletes of the month.  As a result, each was honored with a certificate of recognition, compliments of Articulate Solutions, and a $25 gift certificate from Famous Dave’s.  Their names were also added to a perpetual plaque which will be displayed in the foyer of Bud Ottmar Memorial Gymnasium on campus.  From this group, five individuals moved forward as finalists for consideration of this year’s top award.
