Enroll Now in Theatre & TV Arts Summer Day Camps for Youth

WHO:  The Gavilan College STAR Program has been offering theatre and TV arts camps for youth since 1985.  STAR is a safe place for creative expression and has transformed hundreds of children's lives by helping to boost their confidence and poise; encouraging their creative spirits; teaching them collaboration, teamwork, and respect.

STAR is very excited to have STAR Founder and Executive Director Marilyn Abad-Cardinalli return to the front lines to co-direct STAR Gilroy’s 25th anniversary production, The Pirates of Penzance Jr.!  Miss Marilyn, a long-time Gavilan College faculty member, created the STAR Program to give her theatre students, and others who have a special talent for working with children, the opportunity to share their passion for the performing arts with youth.  She has over 30 years experience in directing and producing theatre and television productions.

This summer, Miss Marilyn will nurture the directing talents of veteran STAR kid and current STAR leader, Miss Katie Hipol. Miss Katie’s participation in the STAR Program as a child gave her the passion and confidence to pursue acting in theater productions beyond the safe realm of STAR.  Katie was a member of the first STAR Teatro session located in El Teatro Campesino’s Playhouse in San Juan Bautista. Since her first involvement in an El Teatro Campesino production as an actress in 2005, she has become an ensemble actor with the world-renowned theater company.

WHAT/WHEN/WHERE:  The Gavilan College STAR Program is offering three great programs to inspire your child’s creative spirit this summer.  STAR Gilroy 2010 participants will present Gilbert & Sullivan’s musical The Pirates of Penzance Jr., STAR Video 2010 offers youth the opportunity to create and produce a TV program to air on GavTV-18, and STAR San Juan Bautista 2010 will present actos (short plays) at the historic El Teatro Campesino Playhouse.  Here are the details:

El Teatro Campesino Playhouse, San Juan Bautista

WHY:  Participation in the theatre and television performing arts can help to boost a student’s confidence and poise.  Students learn and practice the values of teamwork, creative collaboration, discipline, and respect. 

No prior experience is necessary.
STAR Gilroy 2010 and STAR San Juan Bautista 2010 are theatre performing arts day camps.  Students experience performing arts fundamentals through fun theatre games, improvisational acting, vocal coaching, and movement exercises.  STAR Video 2010 is a television performing arts day camp and participants learn to use the equipment in the Gavilan College TV Studio to create their own TV program to air on GavTV-18, the college’s educational channel. Student to STAR leader ratio is 10:1.
All STAR summer session are full-day programs (7 hours). In the mornings, participants focus on their productions and in the afternoons, they may come together to enjoy fun camp (unit, workshop, or whole group) activities, including fun theme days.  Ask about Carpool Connections with other STAR families in your community. Before and After Care is available for an additional nominal fee for STAR Gilroy and STAR Video participants only/
