Gavilan College prepared to advance Cal Grant funds if state issues IOU's

GAVILAN COLLEGE, CA - The California Student Aid Commission has advised California financial aid administrators that students' Cal Grants could, beginning in February, be replaced with registered warrants (IOU's) due to the unresolved state budget crisis. Gavilan College leaders announced today that the college would prepare to advance district funds to cover students who rely upon Cal Grants to attend college. This advance of funds is expected to cost the district $82,000, to be paid back by the state when a budget plan is enacted. An estimated 275 Gavilan College students are expected to receive the grants this Spring, which can be used to purchase textbooks and necessary course materials.

"We don't want our students to miss a semester, or to delay in acquiring the textbooks and supplies they will need to succeed in their classes," said John Pruitt, Vice President of Student Services. Gavilan College's Financial Aid Director, Veronica Martinez anticipates heavy demand for financial aid this year: "I anticipate we'll have more applicants this aid year given the economic conditions. Last year, more than 4,000 students applied for Financial Aid at Gavilan College, of which 3,171 qualified for the BOG Tuition Fee Waiver, our largest aid program."

Cal Grants, funded by the state of California, are cash grants for eligible college students enrolled at least half-time. To be considered for a Cal Grant, students must be U.S. citizens or eligible non-citizens, and must be California residents. They must also meet selective service requirements. Community College students may apply for Cal Grants type B and C (type A is only for students at 4-year colleges.)
