New TV series on GavTV Channel 18 will profile organizations and individuals in the community

WHO: Interesting organizations, individuals and events in the communities that make up the Gavilan Joint Community College District, which runs from South San Jose to San Benito County.

WHAT: Will be profiled on a new television show that will air on GavTV, cable channel 18, managed by the Community Media Access Partnership (CMAP). The new show is called Gavilan College Connections. It's tagline is "if it's happening in South County, chances are it's got a Gavilan College Connection" Each episode will profile an individual, organization, or event in South Valley, and explore it's "Gavilan College Connection." Each episode will air for two weeks.

The first episode, which premiered this week, features El Teatro Campesino in San Juan Bautista, and gives us a look behind the scenes of their current production, "I Don't Have To Show You No Stinkin' Badges." Gavilan College faculty member Marilyn Abad Cardinalli has been involved with El Teatro Campesino since 1989. She is on the Board of Directors for the Theater, and is directing the current play.

Connections viewers will learn about the history of El Teatro Campesino, and it's role in the local and larger communities through interviews with Cardinalli, playwright and producer Luis Valdez, and the cast of "Badges." They will also get a look at "I Don't Have to Show You No Stinkin' Badges" which was written by Luis Valdez. "Badges" is set in Los Angeles. It is the story of Sonny Villa, a 17-year old Chicano college student who returns home to visit his parents, Hollywood "extras" buddy and Connie Villa, with his older, Asian-American paramour. The play, a comedy, deals with the immigrant experience, expectations around culture and growing up, and the media.

Future episodes will explore Leadership Gilroy, and other organizations and individuals that make the Gavilan Joint Community College District a great place to live.
