WHO: Prospective college students, current students, and community members of all ages.
WHAT: GavFEST is a FREE spring festival and college open house. This year's theme is "GavFEST Goes Green. Environmental exhibitors including the Green Building Council, PG & E, Valley Transit Authority, and Wildlife Education and Rehabilitation Center will be on hand to share tips for eco-friendliness.
GavFEST gives families and community members the opportunity to explore and enjoy Gavilan College's beautiful, picturesque Gilroy campus. Biology students will offer nature tours of the campus, and kids of all ages will be invited to participate in an eco-treasure hunt that will take them all over campus (AND offer a chance to win prizes!)
GavFEST 2008 will include crafts and commercial vendors, activities, entertainment, food, workshops, the GaviLAND kids fun area, arts and crafts, hairstyle and manicure demonstrations, yoga, karaoke, and more. Parents can check out the Child Development Center and learn about summer programs for kids including Summer Theater Arts Repertory and College for Youth.
Potential college students will have the opportunity to apply for admission, speak to counselors and apply for financial aid, attend orientation and tour the campus. The bookstore will be open and will have a sidewalk sale.
There will be plenty of music and dance in a variety of styles: perennial favorite Watsonville Taiko will be back, along with Hip Hop Craze, The Figureheads, Cinco Pollos de San Juan, Ballet Folklorica Fuego Nuevo de San Jose, Chasing Truth, and Gavilan Ngoma. The Gavilan College Theatre troupe will perform a vignette from A Midsummer Night's Dream outdoors, and then a full matinee performance at 2 p.m.
Festival attendees can enjoy food outdoors or indoors. The Gav Cafe will be open, with a special BBQ menu, and simpler fare will be available at the Food Court by the Main Stage.

WHY: GavFEST is an annual open house, to invite the community to have fun while exploring the resources of Gavilan College. Kids are encouraged to come to campus and learn about college so that they know what opportunities are available to them as they grow. parents can learn about opportunities for their children, and job training for themselves. High School seniors can fill out applications and select classes for fall, getting a head start on their higher education.
GavFESt also provides service opportunities for current Gavilan College students, many of whom will be visible throughout the day, providing information, running attractions, and greeting visitors. Over 300 students and staff are expected to volunteer.
