Award-winning poet and visual artist Truong Tran to visit Gavilan College

WHO: Truong Tran is a poet, visual artist, the author of four collections of poetry, and a children's book. The Book of Perceptions (Kearny Street Workshop, 1999) was a finalist in The Kiriyama Book Prize. Placing The Accents (Apogee Press, 1999) was a finalist in the Western States Book Prize for Poetry, dust and conscience (Apogee Press, 2002) was awarded the San Francisco Poetry Center Book Prize and within the margin (Apogee Press, 2004). He recently ventured into the world of children's literature, authoring Going Home Coming Home/Ve Nha, Tham Que Hu'o'ng, a bilingual book about being at home in two countries, which was published by Children's Book Press. His honors include grants from The Fund for Poetry, The Creative Work Fund, The Cultural Equity Grant, and The California Arts Council Grant. Truong lives in San Francisco where he teaches poetry at San Francisco State University and Mills College.

WHAT: This FREE event welcomes all community members. Mr. Tran will read from his books, discuss the issues of tolerance and oppression with attendees. He will bring a display of his visual art as well. Campus parking is $.75.

WHEN: Thursday, February 28, 2008. There will be two session: 8:30am to 9:30am, and again 11:30am to 12:30pm

WHERE: North/South Lounge, Gavilan College Student Center; Gavilan College Gilroy campus; 5055 Santa Teresa Blvd., Gilroy.

WHY: This event hosted by Gavilan Literary Club, Writing Center, the Gavilan English Department, Scott Sandler and his English 440 classes, and Meg Withers and her English 420 classes.
