Gavilan College Child Development Center earns NAEYC accreditation

GILROY, CA - The Gavilan College Child Development Center has earned accreditation from the national Association for the Education of Young Children (NAEYC) - the nation's leading organization of early childhood professionals. It is the only early childhood center in Gilroy to be accredited.

"We're proud to be accredited by NAEYC, and recognized for our commitment to reaching the highest professional standards." said Susan Alonzo, Director of the Gavilan College Child Development Center. "NAEYC Accreditation lets families in our community know that children in our program are getting the best care and early learning experiences." The Gavilan College Child Development Center offers full-time and part-time childcare and preschool for 2-5 year olds. Parents do not have to be Gavilan College students to enroll their children. The center is open from 6:30 a.m. - 6 p.m., Monday through Friday. Breakfast, lunch and snacks are provided. The child-centered program includes indoor and outdoor activities, arts and crafts, computers, and opportunities to enjoy the beautiful Gavilan College Gilroy campus. Staff is well-trained in early childhood education. Current plans call for eliminating the former infant/toddler portion of the program, and expanding the opportunities for 2-5 year olds.

In the 20 years since the NAEYC Accreditation was established, it has become a widely recognized sign of high quality in early childhood education programs. More than 10,000 programs nationally are accredited by NAEYC. NAEYC created its accreditation program in 1985 to set professional standards for early childhood education, and to help families identify high-quality child care and early education programs.

Criteria for high quality include all aspects of an early childhood program: interactions among staff and students, curriculum, staff and parent interactions, administration, staff qualifications and development, staffing patterns, physical environment, health and safety, nutrition and food service, and program evaluation. To earn NAEYC accreditation, a program conducts a self-study to determine how well it meets the standards. After necessary improvements are made, the program is observed by independent auditors and then reviewed by a national panel. Programs are accredited for a five-year period.
