New scholarships will boost Gavilan College aviation program

WHO: The South County Pilots Association is an organization dedicated to the pilots of the South County Airport in San Martin. The mission of the South County Airport Pilots Association is to preserve the South County Airport , improve community relations, participate in any planned growth of the airport, enhance flying safety, and promote fellowship among South County Airport pilots

WHAT: Has created three new scholarships this year, to go to students in the Gavilan College Aviation Maintenance Technology program. The scholarships will help aviation students to complete their program of studies, and reward students for good performance. The students to be recognized are Hechmi Elfeki, Maricela Rivas, and Cesar Estrada.

WHEN: The scholarships will be presented at the Gavilan College Annual Scholarship Awards Ceremony on May 12 from 6:30 p.m.- 8:30 p.m.

WHERE: Gavilan College Student Center, Gilroy campus; 5055 Santa Teresa Blvd.

WHY: "Part of the scholarship award is to help those students who are struggling with more than just getting good grades. We are trying to help those students who face family and personal responsibilities where the financial dynamics are creating additional burdens. We hope by helping to lighten those burdens even in a small way we can give them a better opportunity to complete the program and move into successful aviation maintenance careers. We have been moved by the struggles of some of these students. We want to support them and Gavilan College in helping them overcome those obstacles and complete their education." said Jim Creel, a member of the Board of Directors for the South County Pilot's Association.

From the perspective of Gavilan College, "We look forward to the possibilities of working together with the South County Pilots Association to 'shine a light' on the Gavilan College Aviation program. We know that it will bring many opportunities for our students and the communities we serve. " said Fran Lopez, Interim Dean of Technical and Public Services at Gavilan College.

The South County Pilots Association hopes that the scholarship program will improve lives and help grow a more vital aviation program at the college. "General aviation is growing, and there is a need for skilled people in the industry. There is a shortage of aviation mechanics nationally, not just in general aviation, but in the commercial sector as well," said Creel, "As pilots, and supporters of general aviation, we want to contribute to the future of our community."

The Gavilan College Aviation Maintenance Technology Program, located at the Hollister Airport, provides the skills needed for employment as an aviation mechanic, aircraft serviceperson, airframe specialist, or specialist in aircraft parts and accessories. The program is accredited by the Federal Aviation Administration and can lead to an airframe license, a powerplant license, or both through a combination of academic work and shop experience.
