WHO: The Gavilan College Associated Student Body
WHAT: invites the community to a celebration of Mexican Independence Day, that will include food, mariachi, music, pinatas, a BBQ lunch and a voter registration drive. The event is free and open to the public. There is a charge for lunch.
WHERE: The events will take place on the Gavilan College Gilroy campus, 5055 Santa Teresa Blvd.
WHEN: Thursday, September 16, 10 a.m. - 2 p.m.
WHY: This will be the second year that the September 16 celebration will include voter registration efforts. "Currently the ASB is focusing much of it's efforts on voting and voter registration," said Michelle Vucetich, Associated Student Body Vice President for Communications. "Our goal is to have 200 students registered and voting."
September 16 is celebrated as Mexican Independence Day, when, in the early hours of September 16,1810, a priest, father Hidalgo, accompanied by several conspirators ?Ignacio Allende, and Doña Josefa Ortiz de Domínguez - rang the bell of his little church, calling everyone to fight for liberty. This was the beginning of the Independence War, which lasted 10 years.
