Time and Place Art Exhibition Opening at Gavilan College Art Gallery
Collaborative Photography Project by San Jose based artists Keith Southern and Fanny Retsek
A new art exhibition featuring collaborative photographs by the artists Keith Southern
and Fanny Retsek opens at Gavilan College Gallery on 11/20/2013.
San Jose artists Keith Southern and Fanny Retsek present a new body of work comprised
of collaborative photographs titled Time and Place, in which the artists set out a
framework for themselves wherein they would take a walk together on the weekends and
whenever one would stop to photograph something, the other person also had to
photograph something that they found interesting or “photo-worthy” from that same
location. The show will run from Nov. 20th, 2013 through Feb. 13th, 2014. The show
features pairs of time-stamped photographs laminated side-by-side as per the artists’s
conceptual framework for the show.
The images depict sometimes beautiful, mundane,
quizzical, and abstracted views of the artists’s walks. It is not so much that any one
photograph is especially moving on its own, but when taken together as a pair, the
question of location, time and context enters into the viewer’s mind, and the photographs
are transformed into a questioning of spatio-temporal existence and aesthetic beauty.
Fanny Retsek is a multimedia artist, working primarily in printmaking, drawing, and
photography. Her work has been exhibited in the U.S., Mexico and Australia. She has
been an artist-in-residence at Jentel Artist Residency in Wyoming as well as Works/San
Jose. She received her Master of Fine Arts in Printmaking from San Jose State University
and is currently a Printer at Crown Point Press in San Francisco and was previously the
Master Printer at the San Jose Institute of Contemporary Art.
