Gavilan College Music Department presents
Second Annual Marian Filice
Youth Piano Competition
March 3, 2007
Dear Teachers and Parents:
It is hard to believe that a year has passed since the first annual Marian
Filice Piano Competition. We were overwhelmed with the wonderful response
the competition received last year and we look forward to this years
celebration of musical talents. With the continued support of teachers and
parents, we expect the competition to continue its success.
This Competition will take place at the Gavilan College Theatre on Saturday
March 3, 2007, Gilroy California. Gavilan College welcomes all who live in
the Gavilan College service areas to participate in this event.* It is our
goal to help develop and to support the talents of the young people in our
community as well as to make available the resources we all can share at
Gavilan College.
Marian Filice was a strong supporter of music and arts education, especially
local education. She herself taught piano in Gilroy for many years. We join
her family, whose generous support makes this competition possible, in
hoping to encourage students in striving for musical excellence and in
creating an opportunity for them to share their talents with the entire
community. A more complete biography can be found on our webpage at
www.gavilan.edu/music
The Competition will have three divisions. Division One will be open for
students who are 8 – 10 years old. Division Two will be open for students
who are 11-13 years old and Division Three for 14-18 years old. The
Competition is open to all piano students in these age groups. Each
participant will be expected to have prepared (by memory) two stylistically
contrasting pieces (e.g., Baroque, Classical, Romantic, or Contemporary).
One original copy of the piece must be supplied for the judges on the day of
the Competition. The entry fee is $25.00, non refundable, per
participant paid to Gavilan College.
There will be two judges, to be announced, who will select three winners and
honorable mentions for each division. The winner of Division Three will be
invited to play at the Gavilan Bach To Blues Concert in March
and may be asked to perform for the South Valley Symphony Youth Concert.
Each contestant will get a Certificate of Participation.
