All About Marietta:

I received a B.A. degree in Sociology, a Master’s degree in Elementary and Remedial Education, and a doctorate in Early Childhood Education from the State University of New York at Buffalo.  I hold a life- time credential in Nursery-Elementary Education.

I started my career as a kindergarten teacher with the Buffalo Public Schools.  During my 10-year tenure with the Buffalo public Schools, I also taught in first grade, preschool, and After School-Age programs.  I love working with children and parents, and have had extensive experience working in preschool programs like Head Start and other state and federally funded programs.  I often teach parent education classes and experience the joy of assisting parents to better understand their children.

I began my college career as an Associate Professor at Erie Community College, Child Development Department, Buffalo, New York.  I was next employed as Head Teacher for the State University of New York at Buffalo Early Childhood Education Laboratory School in the preschool, and infant and toddler programs, and then Head Teacher for the Cornell University’s Preschool Laboratory.  I later served as Associate-In-Human Development, and Assistant Director of the University of California at Davis Early Childhood Laboratory School.

I first came to Gavilan College 24 years ago, as the Director of the Child Development Center, and Coordinator of Child Development.  During my tenure at Gavilan, I also served as Department Chair for Social Sciences, Grants Development Officer, and Director of JTPA.  I am presently the Lead Faculty of Child Development and Educational Studies, and Department Chair for Technical and Public Service Education.

My first love is teaching child development classes.  The college students are so eager to learn and it is very rewarding to know that I am helping to prepare the future teachers and childcare workers for our communities.  It is very exciting to finally be in our new Child Development Center.  It was many years in the planning, and now to see the Child Development Center building filled with children, parents and staff is truly a dream come true.  The excellent CDC staff and director are all former students!  What more can a teacher hope for?

This is truly an exciting time to be in Early Childhood Education.  There are many and varied opportunities for training and employment, and I welcome the opportunity of meeting with you and talking about child development issues, careers, parenting, and programs in your community.

The Child Development Training Consortium

I am the Campus Coordinator for the Child Development Training Consortium, CDTC.  The CDTC was created to address the critical shortage of qualified childcare workers in the state of California.  To meet this responsibility, the CDTC provides a variety of services, which better prepare students for continued employment in the field of child care/development. The grant at Gavilan College reimburses tuition for students who are employed at state and federally funded preschool, childcare and school-age centers, as well as privately funded programs, and licensed family day care providers.  Please stop by my office to learn more about the program, and fill out a Participation Profile application.
