Transferable: CSU Provides training in a variety of naturalistic and formal observation techniques, and discusses the use of standardized testing in children. Students learn to use formal observation tools, make a case study portfolio and give a parent conference. Observing children in classroom settings is required. Interaction of family, school and community. Significance of personal and social values in family life and community action. Individual and social resources for family life including health, welfare and improving child development. CD 6 Games and Rhythms for Children Units: 3 Hours: 3 Lecture Advisory: Eligible for English 250 and English 260. Transferable: CSU Nature, function and organization of physical activities for the preschool and elementary school age child. Emphasis is given to the understanding of psychomotor development and spatial awareness. Designed for those planning to work with children. Also listed as Physical Education 6. This course has the option of a letter grade or credit/no credit. CD 7 Cultural Context of Childhood Units: 3 Hours: 3 Lecture Advisory: Eligible for English 250 and English 260. Transferable: CSU; CSU-GE: D7; GAV-GE: D2, F This course examines cultural infliuences on child-rearing practices, family values, and human development. Perspectives from the social sciences will be used to explore what is common to all Homo sapiens and what is specific to the culture of the U.S. Students will explore their own personal assumptions and attitudes towards diversity, and practice implementing non-stereotypical, developmentally appropriate, anti-bias activities, interactions and environments in order to respond to and intervene against prejudice among children. CD 8A American Education in a Changing World Units: 3 Hours: 3 Lecture Transferable: CSU This course provides an overview of education in the United States. It examines the issues, problems, and solutions to teaching in a pluralistic society by viewing schools as social institutions that refliect the values and dynamics of a society. It focuses on the history, politics, theories and approaches to teaching culturally and linguistically diverse children and analyzes career opportunities and new directions in education. For students who wish to expand their knowledge of education in America, and those who wish to explore careers in teaching. This course includes a Service Learning component that will encourage students to explore and apply concepts from the class. This course has the option of a letter grade or credit/no credit. CD 8B Teaching Reading and Writing to Children Units: 3 Hours: 3 Lecture Advisory: Completion of English 250, English 260 or equivalent. Transferable: CSU This course is designed to teach prospective teachers how a child learns to read and write successfully in school. Specific techniques will be taught. Students will be expected to register concurrently in 1-4 units of CD 190-Cooperative Work Experience in order to facilitate opportunities to work regularly with children. This course has the option of a letter grade or credit/no credit. CD 9 Child Health, Nutrition and Safety Units: 3 Hours: 3 Lecture Advisory: Eligible for English 250 and English 260. Transferable: CSU Health, Safety and Nutrition promotion in young children is studied. Course covers illness and accident prevention, quality food programs and community resources for health, safety and nutrition. Students will learn to promote making healthier choices by teaching hygiene, safety practices and nutritious food choices. Poison prevention, fire and earthquake safety and emergency preparedness is covered. Students learn to design lesson plans to teach children and their parents to make healthy, safe and nutritious choices. CD 10 Children with Special Needs Units: 3 Hours: 3 Lecture Advisory: Eligible for English 250 and English 260. Completion of CD 2. Transferable: CSU An introductory course in special education, which includes a survey of special needs such as learning disabilities, emotional disturbances, developmental delays, physical limitations, cognitive differences, and giftedness. Students will study the history of special education and legislation in the USA, ethical assessment and family-based intervention techniques, diversity and family issues, advocacy for special needs children, and the use of technology in special education environments. This course has the option of a letter grade or credit/no credit. CD 11A Administration of Programs for Young Children Units: 3 Hours: 3 Lecture Advisory: Child Development 1 and 2. Transferable: CSU The principles and practices of the organization and administration of facilities for preschool aged children. Areas covered include organizational structure, budgeting, personnel policies and practices, records, statistics, reporting, relationship with community resources, regulatory agencies, and parents. CD 11B Administration of Publicly Funded Child Care Programs Units: 3 Hours: 3 Lecture Advisory: Completion of 12 units in Child Development or working in an administrative capacity in a children's program. Transferable: CSU This course is designed to meet the State Department of Education requirements for directors of publicly funded child development programs, and the Supervisory Child Development Permit. Topics covered include development of personnel policies that refliect the philosophy and goals and objectives of the program, development of a staff development plan, classroom management and record keeping, assessment and curriculum planning, and parent involvement/education. Financial record keeping will be discussed from the perspective of the granting agency. CD 11C Supervision of Adults: The Mentor Teacher Units: 2 Hours: 2 Lecture Advisory: Prefer that students meet the requirements for the State Child Development Teacher Permit or completion of a college-level course of study in child development or early childhood education, or equivalent, or permission of instructor. Transferable: CSU A study of the methods and principles of supervising adults in early childhood settings. Emphasis is on the role of the experienced classroom teacher who functions as a "mentor/supervisor" to teachers, aides, and other adults. This course meets the requirements for the State Child Development Permit Matrix: "2 unit adult supervision class" and the Mentor Teacher Program. Lectures, discussions, in class and out of class activities, role-play simulations, readings, individual and group assignments as well as videos and guest presenters will be used. CD 12 Computer Education for Teachers Units: 3 Hours: 3 Lecture Advisory: CSIS 122 Computer Keyboarding, or equivalent; English 250 with a grade of C or better. Transferable: CSU The history, uses and development of computers in education. Basic computer skills and terminology will be taught in the context of teacher education. Students who successfully complete this course will understand general and specific skills and knowledge required to meet the Technology Standard for Multiple and Single Subject Credential Candidates. CD 13 Infant and Toddler Development and Care Units: 3 Hours: 3 Lecture Advisory: Eligible for English 250 and English 260. Child Development 2. Transferable: CSU Students will study the developmental stages of growth specific to infants and toddlers and learn how to foster positive techniques for nurturing infants and toddlers in group settings. Students will study the RIE philosophy and learn how to observe children in child care and home day care settings. This course has the option of a letter grade or credit/no credit. CD 14A Working with School Age Children Units: 3 Hours: 3 Lecture Advisory: Eligible for English 250 and 260. Child Development 3. Transferable: CSU Students will learn the developmental characteristics of school aged children, issues relating to before and after school programs for children from kindergarten to grade eight, and specific details of administering and leading such a program. Other topics include recreation versus academic enrichment, staffing requirements, age groupings, program content, and community resources. This course has the option of a letter grade or credit/no credit. CD 14B Behavior Management & Guidance of School Age Children Units: 3 Hours: 3 Lecture Advisory: English 250, English 260, and CD 3 Transferable: CSU The nature of children's development stages causes school age children to act in different ways at different ages. This course helps students understand the relationship of development, environment, culture and social circumstances to children's behavior. An overview of guidance theories offers strategies to reinforce positive behaviors, encourage communication & cooperation, and establish age-appropriate and consistent limits in a variety of circumstances. This course has the option of a letter grade or credit/no credit. CD 15 Exploring Music with Children Units: 1 Hours: 1 Lecture Advisory: Eligible for English 250 and English 260. Transferable: CSU Techniques for helping the non-musician to express emotions and ideas in a musical fashion, practice in building simple rhythm instruments and using rhythm in song instruction. An extensive discography and bibliography will be provided each student. CD 16 Exploring Mathematics with Children Units: 1 Hours: 1 Lecture Advisory: Eligible for English 250 and English 260. Transferable: CSU Introduction to the excitement and extensiveness of mathematic experiences in programs for young children. Presentation of an organized, sequential approach to developing a math curriculum. CD 17 Exploring Science with Children Units: 1 Hours: 1 Lecture Advisory: Eligible for English 250 or 260. Transferable: CSU Learn to teach an ongoing, coordinated science curriculum to young children that builds on knowledge children already possess and uses materials that are easily located and of low cost. The Socratic method of questioning is taught as the basis of encouraging reasoning in children. Transferable: CSU Designing and constructing outdoor play environments for young children that provide opportunities for large and small muscle activities, social, quiet, and noisy play, and creative experiences. Transferable: CSU An overview of Department of Social Services and Department of Education regulations regarding child care workers in California. Self-assessment techniques with emphasis on teacher-child and teacher-adult relationships and personal evaluations. Basic principles of curriculum development and discipline techniques. Transferable: CSU A developmental view of children's language and literacy learning in a framework of children's literature. Students will be presented with steps in children's literacy learning in order to help them organize classrooms and plan activities to support the growth of writing and reading. Students will study historical trends in children's literature and participate in practical experiences and activities that use a wide range of techniques and materials for advancing language comprehension and usage. CD 21 Creative Experiences for Children Units: 2 Hours: 1.5 Lecture, 1.5 Laboratory Advisory: Eligible for English 250 and English 260. Transferable: CSU An interpretation of the values of creative experiences for young children. Illustrated lectures and demonstrations with student participation cover such topics as use of blocks, music, rhythms, body movement, art experiences and other creative projects. CD 24 Educational Cooking & Nutritional Experiences for Children Units: 2 Hours: 1.5 Lecture, 1.5 Laboratory Transferable: CSU Focuses on methods of helping young children acquire basic knowledge and positive attitudes towards nutritious foods. Students develop projects, prepare educational experiences, make educational games and activities that support key concepts in nutrition. The student will also learn to complete government reimbursement forms and state approved menus. Transferable: CSU Thinking skills for young children presents an overview of the cognitive development of the young child and the practical understanding of Piaget's theory. Students will learn how to translate this theory into appropriate classroom environments including the High Scope Model, the Responsive Environment Model, and other preschool and day care center models. Students will then learn to plan, write, and evaluate curriculum activities in cognitive areas of learning. CD 28D Issues in Family Foster Parenting Units: 1 Hours: 1 Lecture Transferable: CSU An understanding of the unique adult-child relationships and interactions in the foster care situation. Illustrations and methods of identifying and dealing with specific problems will be presented. Includes a review of referral agencies and techniques of dealing with regulator agencies. CD 29 Introduction to High/Scope Curriculum Units: 2 Hours: 2 Lecture Advisory: Eligible for English 250 and 260. Transferable: CSU High/Scope Curriculum emphasizes a process of learning useful for a wide range of children: gifted and normally developing, bilingual and multi-cultural, varied age and mildly and moderately disabled. CD 31 Tutoring School-Age Children Units: 1 Hours: 1 Lecture Transferable: CSU An introductory course for students who wish to work as tutors in classroom settings. Students will gain and apply skills needed to function within a public school setting and develop effective strategies for helping children learn to read and write. Additionally, students will be encouraged to explore related career options, while developing and practicing social awareness and the ability to learn from field experiences in a self-directed manner. This is a credit/no credit course. CD 97 Introduction to Service Learning with Children Units: 3 Hours: 3 Lecture Transferable: CSU Service Learning is a method through which community participation, academic subjects, skills, and awareness are linked. Through a combination of community-based learning experiences, reading and writing assignments, and classroom-based learning experiences, this course seeks to foster the development of self-refliective, culturally aware and responsive community participants. Students will complete a minimum of 30 hours of community service work during the semester. This course has the option of a letter grade or credit/no credit. CD 160 Child Care First Aid and CPR Units: 1 Hours: 1 Lecture Transferable: CSU First aid training to prepare child care professionals to meet the needs of emergencies when medical assistance is delayed. Includes information on the prevention of childhood injuries and the prevention of communicable diseases including HIV/AIDS and the use of Universal Precautions. (Satisfies the California Community Care Licensing requirement for 15 hours of specialized health and safety training.) This is a credit/no credit course and may be repeated three times for credit. CD 190 Occupational Work Experience/Child Development Units: 1-4 Hours: 20 Laboratory Required: Declared vocational major. Concurrent enrollment in seven or more units (including CWE units, except for summer school. For summer school, enrollment in one other class is required). Minimum 2.00 G.P.A. Transferable: CSU College credit for learning experience obtained on the job in accordance with a training plan developed cooperatively between the employer, college and student. 75 hours per semester per unit or 60 hours per semester for unpaid experience.
